Art Davis is dead

Art Davis, 73, Contrabassist mostly known for his recorded works with John Coltrane: Ole, Ascension, African Brass Sessions of the early mid 1960s. Also recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Gigi Gryce and vocalist Abbey Linclon including numerous other Jazz artists. Davis not just a "sideman" he recorded as a leader, his own album Re-Emergence of the early 1980s is considered a col-lectors item. His 1995 LP Art Davis/A Time Remembered (Classic/Jazz Planet) recording features Herbie Hancock and John Coltrane's son Ravi on saxophone.

Not just a performer, Davis wrote the book: "The Arthur Davis System For Double Bass". He was known for his clear tone and articulation with the bow. Other styles of music interested Davis has work or recorded with Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, Lena Horne, Buffy St. Marie(recorded), Bob Dylan.

At 17 he studied with the main bassist with the Philadelphai Orchestra and eventually received a scholarship to Eastman School of Music. Howard Hansen was the director of Eastman at the time, who gave the scholarship to Davis.

Earning his doctorate(New York University)in clinical psychology in 1981, he continued to play music. He also taught at UC Irvine in California for two years. A heart Attack claimed his life while at his home in Long Beach, California. He is survived by two sons and a daughter.
