| Howard Jazz Ensemble Coming to Gannon Professor Fred Irby, III and the Howard University Jazz Ensemble will play at the Gannon University on Thursday, Jan. 26 as part of Gannon’s Artist-in-Residence program and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Events. Irby, director and founder of the Ensemble, is a professor of music at Howard University in Washington, D.C. This extraordinary college jazz ensemble consists of 28 student musicians and has performed across the United States, Europe, South America, Asia, and the Caribbean. Twenty-nine recordings of the Howard University Jazz Ensemble have been released since 1976. Many members of the ensemble have won awards as performers and composers/arrangers. Recently, the HUJE was featured during the 28th Annual Kennedy Center Honors Gala, which was televised on CBS on December 27, 2005. In a tribute to singer Tony Bennett, the Howard Jazz Ensemble performed with singers Vanessa Williams, k.d. lang, and John Legend. Irby and the Howard Jazz Ensemble will offer a performance workshop for Gannon faculty, staff and students on Jan. 26 at 1:30 p.m. in the Yehl Room, located on the second floor of the Waldron Center. During the workshop, Irby will talk briefly about the HUJE’s experiences on their recent trip to Japan. In addition, several of the students will perform their original compositions. Then, at 7 p.m. that evening, the HUJE will perform in a 75-minute concert, which will also be located in the Yehl Alumni Room, Waldron Center.
