Tiered SAS/SATA Disk Array Expands to 80 TB

Winchester Systems has announced a new tiered SAS/SATA disk array that expands to 80 TB of primary and secondary storage in a single solution that are available for both SAS and Fibre Channel hosts. For added protection of today's very large RAID disk arrays, the company includes high-speed, ASIC-driven RAID 6 dual-parity that protects data in the event of two drive failures as well as rebuild failures.

The company's FlashDisk SX-3402S disk array provides up to 80 TB of storage using a 3U base unit that includes a single RAID controller and 16 high capacity disks. The base unit supports up to four 3U expansion shelves, each with 16 drives, for a total of 80 high capacity SAS and/or SATA disk drives. SAS drives provide outstanding performance with 10K rpm and 15K rpm disk drives with capacities of 146 GB, 300 GB and 400 GB for primary applications including database, transaction processing, video and other high performance requirements. The SATA drives with capacities of 500 GB, 750 GB and 1 TB provide outstanding reliability and performance with very low cost per terabyte for deep archives, security video, medical imaging, backup, snapshot, disaster recovery, virtual tape library, data acquisition, digital imaging and audio. This model offers two SAS 4x wide host ports for direct attach to up to two servers. The company's SX-3494S model offers four 4 Gb Fibre Channel ports.

FlashDisk SX-3404R, with dual redundant controllers with auto-failover and auto-failback for reliability and uptime, offers up to three 3U expansion shelves with a total of 64 high capacity SATA disk drives for up to 64 TB of total capacity. It provides four SAS 4x wide host ports. Their SX-3498R model offers eight 4 Gb Fibre Channel ports.

All models provide low cost "SAN-In-A-Box" connectivity for two to eight servers respectively without the need for expensive switches.

The FlashDisk SX-3400 Series provides high performance and low cost per terabyte and offers up to 224 TB of tiered storage in a single 42U high rack in just six square feet of floor space. It offers up to 1,514 MB per second sustained throughput and 80,000 disk I/O operations per second using SAS drives. The unit also delivers impressive performance for SATA secondary storage device delivering 1,150 MB per second sustained throughput and over 117,000 disk I/O operations per second.

According to the company's white paper, "Enterprise RAID 6", RAID 6 dual parity offers 500 to 30,000 times longer MTDL (Mean Time To Data Loss) than RAID 5. An informative 6-minute presentation "RAID 6 Essentials" is also available.
