Imprivata Heals Password Problems for UK Healthcare Organisations

Imprivata announces that the OneSign appliance now supports integration with the smart cards issued as part of the NHS Connecting for Health programme. This integration has led to a continued level of success in the NHS market for Imprivata, with eleven Trusts choosing OneSign to meet their password and identity management requirements in the last three months alone.

Connecting for Health's National Programme for IT initiative will provide doctors, nurses and consultants with a series of centrally provided applications covering patient records, booking schedules and prescription details, as well as implementing a national high-speed network to connect all NHS Trusts to this data. However, Trusts will still face password issues with locally based applications that are not covered by the National Program.

Each user is provided with a smart card for secure access to the National Programme for IT applications. Imprivata's OneSign appliance can now use this smart card as a second factor for authentication and provide single sign-on capabilities for all a user's authorised applications, whether they are provided by the Trust itself or as part of the National Programme. This approach allows staff the ability to move in and out of secure applications more quickly so they can instead concentrate on treating patients more efficiently, while maintaining security for sensitive information.

Imprivata's OneSign appliance is in use at Nottingham University Hospitals, where the solution is being rolled out to 8,000 staff. Sixteen applications have been enabled for single sign-on, with seven to be deployed during 2007.

The OneSign appliance manages all authentication access and single sign-on activities, as well as potentially integrating with a hospital's physical security systems. Data on access requests is stored within the appliance and can be used to generate reports on individual user activity, application usage across an organisation and even when users are sharing password details. Above all, OneSign removes password issues for users and IT alike, while increasing security across both national and local applications.
