Juniper Networks Expands Secure Services Gateway Family

Juniper Networks has added three new appliance lines to the Secure Services Gateway (SSG) Family of branch office security products. The new SSG 5, SSG 20 and SSG 140, which collectively bring nine new SSG models, combine proven firewall/virtual private networking (FW/VPN) and robust routing with a complete set of Unified Threat Management (UTM) security features to protect traffic as it flows in and out of the branch office. The SSG 5, and SSG 20 are targeted at small branch offices and telecommuter environments while the SSG 140 is suited for medium-sized branch offices, and stand alone businesses.

The SSG products are purpose-built platforms architected from the ground-up with security as the foundation. West Coast Labs, an independent third-party testing organization, recently highlighted the SSG family's flexible array of advanced protection components in a UTM technology report . Following tests, West Coast Labs' reviewers stated the feature-rich platform was a proven solution for securing corporate networks against multiple levels of potential attack, including virus, spyware and hacker based threats. Effective, real-world testing of the built-in FW, VPN, anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-spam, web filtering and IPS technologies resulted in the device systematically and accurately detecting and preventing a full range of attack profiles, while operating in both simple and complex business scenarios.

The new SSG 5 and 20 platforms deliver 160 Mbps of Stateful FW traffic and 40 Mbps of IPSec VPN throughput. The new SSG 140 platforms deliver more than 350 Mbps of FW traffic and 100 Mbps of IPSec VPN. Using Juniper's trusted ScreenOS 5.4 operating system, the SSG Family delivers a complete set of best-in-class integrated UTM security features including Intrusion Prevention, Antivirus (includes Anti-Spyware, Anti-Adware, Anti-Phishing), Anti-Spam, and Web Filtering to protect traffic flowing in and out of the branch office from worms, spyware, trojans, and malware. The rich set of UTM security features allows the SSG 5, SSG 20 and SSG 140 appliances to be deployed as a stand alone network protection device. When combined with the robust ScreenOS routing engine, the SSG 5, SSG 20 and SSG 140 appliances can also be deployed as a secure router to help reduce IT capital and operational expenditures.

The new SSG Family additions bring a total of nine new models to the branch office environments, each with the same set of proven security features and robust routing capabilities.
* The SSG 5 is a series of six fixed form-factor platforms, each with seven fast Ethernet ports and a factory configured WAN I/O option (ISDN BRI S/T or V.92 or RS232 Serial/Aux). Optional support for 802.11 a/b/g brings a complete network in a box.
* The SSG 20 is the first sub-$1000 modular security and networking device, delivering five fast Ethernet ports plus two expansion slots that support optional ADSL2+, T1, E1, ISDN BRI S/T and V.92 connectivity, and like the SSG 5, the SSG 20 supports optional 802.11 a/b/g connectivity.
* The SSG 140 is a modular platform with eight fast Ethernet ports and two copper Gb ports, making it the platform with the highest interface density in the $3000 class along with the least expensive copper Gb platform. For increased I/O flexibility, the SSG 140 has four WAN I/O expansion slots that support optional T1, E1, ISDN BRI S/T and Serial connectivity.

The SSG Family's WAN I/O options deliver improved connectivity options for extended investment protection and the ability to consolidate security and routing devices at the branch office.
