Unisys Selects Dual-Core Intel Xeon Processor 7100 Series

Unisys has announced its commitment to the new Dual-Core Intel Xeon Processor 7100 Series - codenamed "Tulsa" - as a key step in development of its recently unveiled next-generation server architecture. Unisys was among the first system providers to announce support for the new Dual-Core Intel Xeon platform.

The new Dual-Core Xeon processors provide virtualization capabilities that Unisys plans to extend with hypervisor software it is developing for the next-generation architecture to optimize application performance, resource utilization and power consumption. Virtualization enables applications using different operating environments to run simultaneously in a single partitioned processor space on a computer system. The operating environments can share application workloads dynamically, optimizing resource usage and increasing operational efficiency.

Intended as a common platform for all Unisys enterprise servers, including the ES7000 and ClearPath families, Unisys next-generation server architecture will be the first in the market capable of running Microsoft Windows, Linux and Unisys OS 2200 and MCP simultaneously while sharing application workloads in a virtualized environment.

Unisys also plans to begin delivering models of the current ES7000/one server line incorporating the Dual-Core Intel Xeon platform in the fourth quarter of 2006.

According to Intel, the Dual-Core Intel Xeon 7100 Processor can boost transaction performance up to 70 percent and double the Java server performance of the previous generation of technology.

The Unisys enterprise servers in which the Dual-Core Intel Xeon 7100 Series platform will be integrated are designed for deployment in a real-time infrastructure which is driven by the customer's business policies and which directly and dynamically enables strategic business processes. This helps customers realize key benefits of secure business operations - breakthrough performance in customer service, greater agility in IT management with minimized risk and higher availability, improved operational efficiency and enhanced cost control.

Using the Unisys 3D Visible Enterprise (3D-VE) approach, Unisys complements its powerful enterprise servers with integrated software tools and a rich suite of consulting, implementation and management services for optimizing real-time infrastructures, consolidating IT, and enabling application environments to benefit from Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and open source software.
