Wire-speed 48-Port 1000 Mbps module

Foundry Networks announced a wire-speed 48-port 10/100/1000 Mbps module for its award-winning BigIron RX-Series family of Layer 2/3 Ethernet switches. The new module increases the non-blocking Gigabit Ethernet capacity to 768 ports for a single switch and 2, 304 ports in a standard 7 foot equipment rack. The high density configurations are suited for high capacity server farms and high performance computing environments where the number of servers and compute nodes are driving demand for non-blocking interconnect solutions that can scale well beyond 500 Gigabit Ethernet ports.

The new mini RJ-21 48 port 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet module supports high density configurations without compromising Quality of Service (QoS), latency or throughput. All ports are non-blocking to ensure wire-speed performance. This is in contrast to other solutions on the market that achieve high density configurations using over-subscribed architectures that are subject to service degradation during periods of peak traffic or network abuse.

The new module utilizes compact mini RJ-21 connectors and cables to streamline cable management. This design reduces the number of cables by one- sixth compared to solutions that use standard RJ-45 Ethernet connectors and cables. Another important benefit is the module's power efficiency. A BigIron RX-16 chassis fully configured with 768 wire-speed Gigabit Ethernet ports requires less than 7 watts per gigabit port. This is 40% less power usage than competing products from other vendors. This savings will have a significant impact on the solution's annual cost of ownership.
