Sierra Wireless Mini Card module to provide EV-DO link

Sierra Wireless today announced that the Sierra Wireless MC5720 EV-DO PCI Express Mini Card embedded module is to supply mobile broadband connectivity to the new HP Compaq nc6140 Notebook PC.

With the integration of Sierra Wireless Mini Card modules, AirCard Enabled HP notebooks allow mobile professionals to quickly and conveniently access email and corporate information while on the go(1), including large attachments and data-intensive online applications. With wide area wireless connectivity on an EV-DO network, busy professionals can work productively within cellular coverage areas - from a client site, park bench, or even the back of a taxi - without spending valuable time looking for hotspots.

"We are pleased to collaborate with HP in bringing the power of AirCard Enabled EV-DO connectivity to their business notebook product line, " said Dan Schieler, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales for Sierra Wireless. "Embedded mobile broadband links supported by Sierra Wireless technology offer a level of convenience and simplicity that we think customers will find to be a compelling way to improve their productivity outside the office."

"Working with experienced providers such as Sierra Wireless, HP delivers another high-quality product to our notebook customers with the new HP Compaq nc6140 Notebook PC, " said Carol Hess-Nickels, Director of Commercial Notebook Marketing, HP. "Sierra Wireless has extensive experience in integrating wide area wireless connections into notebook PCs and provided integration and certification support services to help us deliver an on-time product to our customers."

The Sierra Wireless MC5720 PCI Express Mini Card is the first product in the Mini Card series of embedded modules designed to integrate into portable computers and other mobile computing devices, delivering the benefits of 3G speeds with the reliability customers have come to expect from Sierra Wireless's award-winning AirCard(R) products.

The dual-band MC5720 PCI Express Mini Card is built using the MSM6500 Mobile Station Modem chipset from QUALCOMM. To provide coverage in areas where an EV-DO network connection is not available, the MC5720 module is also compatible with widely available 1X networks(2) and will switch without interruption to the user.

Sierra Wireless PCI Express Mini Card modules include a common comprehensive WHQL-certified USB software driver architecture that provides superior power management, a dedicated diagnostic channel and the ability to enable or disable NDIS, which provides maximum flexibility to OEM customers when designing their wireless product. To simplify and expedite product development cycles, Sierra Wireless also provides OEM customers a comprehensive software development kit (SDK) and Sierra Wireless's own Watcher software for easy connection management. The MC5720 measures 51 x 30 x 4.5 mm, weighs in at less than 12 g, and complies with new European Union directives on RoHS (Restrictions on Hazardous Substances).
