Sun selected as Harris IT infrastructure partner

Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced its alliance with Harris Corporation has enabled the successful deployment of a Sun-based IT system for the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) Network Operations Center (NOC). The success of Sun's hardware and software IT solutions for FTI, which includes Sun Fire servers running the Solaris Operating System (OS), Sun SE9900 disk storage, Sun tape libraries, Sun Java System Software and Sun Services, has spawned a model for future government integration and modernization projects.

FTI is an industry and FAA alliance to create an integrated suite of modern telecommunications products, services, and business practices effectively meeting all FAA strategic, operational, administrative and architectural goals. FTI will be the primary means to acquire telecommunications services for the FAA through 2017. The FTI program, which uses a broad spectrum of Sun IT solutions, employs a modern, highly reliable, consolidated network infrastructure, while effectively incorporating Harris Corporation's multi-service capabilities at the lowest possible cost. Roughly 30, 000 telecommunications services will transition to over 5, 000 FAA and non-FAA facilities.

"Sun is proud to have the opportunity to work with Harris Corporation on this extremely critical, government modernization project, " said John Marselle, Chief Operating Officer of Sun Microsystems Federal.

The FTI contract was awarded to Harris Corporation on July 15, 2002. As the FTI systems integrator and prime contractor, Harris is leading a team of top telecommunications companies to fully implement and meet timelines for FTI. Harris selected Sun early in the program as a partner capable of assisting Harris with a broad range of IT systems and services. This alliance recently resulted in the milestone of Harris delivering the 1000th telecommunication service to the FAA for the FTI program.

"Sun's support with the architecture, design, installation, and maintenance of many aspects of the dual Network Operations Centers for FTI is an important contribution towards the success of the program, " said John O'Sullivan, Harris Vice President of the FTI Program. "Harris has benefited greatly from this alliance, and we look forward to working with Sun on other government integration and modernization projects in the future."

John Marselle said, "The Harris-Sun alliance for FTI will allow others to see a Sun-based IT infrastructure in a uniquely integrated telecommunications system solution. What's more, we want all government systems integrators to view Sun as this kind of partner."
