Extreme Networks demonstrates integrated network security

Extreme Networks, Inc. is demonstrating the power of its integrated security framework to help mitigate security threats and maintain network availability in the midst of worm storms, virus storms and day-zero threats at this week's CSI Annual Security Conference. The Company is showcasing its solutions' ability to cost-effectively provide network-wide protection at 10 Gigabit speed. Security professionals can see and experience Extreme Networks' solutions in booth 610 at the CSI conference.

Attendees of the CSI event will be able to view the three main elements of Extreme Networks' security framework that work in harmony to help maintain network availability while under attack. The first element is the suite of security features built into every Extreme Networks switch. This includes user and usage policies, internal firewalling, and other basic security functions.

The second element is the CLEAR-Flow Security Rules Engine. CLEAR-Flow works within the BlackDiamond 10K core switch and can perform Layer 2/3 packet inspection at line rate, up to and including 10 Gigabit speeds, on all traffic passing through the switch. The engine automatically detects anomalous traffic and, based on its rules, enforces appropriate policies such as blocking the traffic, throttling the bandwidth, or redirecting the traffic to the third element of Extreme's security framework -- the Sentriant Virtual Security Resource (VSR) Appliance.

The Sentriant VSR is a security appliance that uses behavior-based threat detection methods to quickly identify rapidly propagating threats, such as virus and worm storms and day-zero attacks. It is designed to work in tandem with the CLEAR-Flow rules engine and Extreme Networks' ExtremeWareXOS switch operating system. When CLEAR-Flow detects suspicious traffic, it mirrors the traffic to Sentriant for more detailed analysis. Based on the results, Sentriant directs the core switch through ExtremeWareXOS to take specific action to mitigate the threat. This strategy enables the Sentriant appliance to provide detailed packet inspection for the entire network without impact on link performance.

"The complexity and unpredictability of security threats, combined with today's multi-gigabit networks and high availability requirements, make securing a network both overwhelming and costly, " said Suresh Gopalakrishnan, vice president of worldwide marketing for Extreme Networks." At the CSI conference, attendees will see how our integrated security framework effectively delivers threat detection and mitigation, while maintaining network availability and performance."
