Cogito launches first commercial graph database

Cogito, Inc. today announced the availability of its graph database and data analysis solution that allows organizations to quickly query and view massive amounts of data and associated relationships improving data analysis, situation intelligence and process understanding.

The Cogito Knowledge Center has at its core a graph database that, by storing information as graphical nodes and their respective relationships as arcs, provides a powerful way for organizations to overcome the challenges of recursive queries, long wait times and complicated SQL programming required to analyze data with more traditional database technology.

By seamlessly interfacing to Oracle, DB2, SQL Server and MySQL, the Cogito Knowledge Center provides a complement to existing data management strategies and offers intelligence and security organizations, life sciences companies, manufacturing plants and others the ability to quickly see patterns in structured and unstructured data and make better decisions regarding the achievement of strategic direction and objectives.

"Today's relational database solutions are good for maintaining and understanding the attributes of information, but they have limitations that make it difficult to quickly and easily see relationship patterns or navigate large data sets, " said William Donahoo, vice president of marketing and product management. "Cogito Knowledge Center complements existing data management strategies allowing organizations flexibility and expanded capability in learning proactively from their rich data stores."

The Cogito Knowledge Center is made up of three key components -- The Data Integration Broker, The Cogito Knowledge Center Workbench and The Cogito Graph Engine. These modules are combined together in a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and support both JAVA and .NET architectures.

* The Data Integration Broker assimilates data into the Graph engine from various sources within an organization. Using virtual data connections to existing databases or pre-identified files in various formats, the Data Integration Broker assimilates data into the defined graph models and ingests it into the Cogito Graph Engine and dynamically tracks the data needs of a query.

* Cogito Knowledge Center Workbench is a Windows-based console that provides the ability to map, model, ingest, query, analyze and report data in the Cogito Knowledge Center.

* The powerful Cogito Graph Engine is a Java-based core that runs on both Windows and Linux, 32-bit and 64-bit systems and supports detailed models comprised of object nodes and arcs to inherently simplify the discovery of data relationships.

Northrop Grumman beta tested the Cogito Knowledge Center in its own internal research and development.

"Cogito's off-the-shelf Knowledge Center exceeded our expectations in performance and its ability to assimilate information, " said Sandra Hettinga, principal investigator, Northrop Grumman Corporation. "We also were able to utilize Cogito's flexible APIs for our customized development projects."

In simple terms, The Cogito Knowledge Center assimilates data into data models to provide quick queries and allow users to review infinite or N-degree relationship patterns. Specific benefits include:

* Focus on relationships of specific data items to other data items instead of just providing a piece of data and its attributes.

* Provides an immediate two-dimensional representation of the data rather than rows and columns. Allowing the user to conduct visualized data queries for fast situation analysis and relationship knowledge.

* Maintain a dynamic schema with a node and arc architecture allowing for better heterogeneous data aggregation and integration along with lower cost administration and maintenance.

* Increase query performance and data navigation speeds 10 to 100 times over RDBMS.

The Cogito Knowledge Center applies proven graph theory and algorithms for use with currently used data analytics software. In addition to support for a Service Oriented Architectures (SOA), and employs open standards such as Java and .NET provides easy integration into existing applications and data management systems.
