Alcatel and OSS partners advance carrier ethernet services

Alcatel today announced new features for its best-in-class service-aware management portfolio that streamline operations and improve the usability of Ethernet for service providers and enterprises. These new features, based on the Alcatel 5620 Service Aware Manager, are further enhanced by integration of solutions from Syndesis, InfoVista and EMC Corporation -- class-leading OSS providers whose products have been pre- certified as part of the Alcatel Connected Partner Program to ensure simplified integration and rapid roll-out of services.

Ethernet has long been the choice of enterprises for their corporate networks. Alcatel has taken a leadership role in maturing the technology to meet the needs of service providers who must respond to new enterprise demands for complex and on-demand mission-critical applications over Ethernet. "Based on our eight-carrier research, networks based on Alcatel's equipment lead the other vendors in terms of provisioning efficiencies, " wrote Ovum-RHK in a recent report entitled "VPLS Growth Requires Carrier-Class Network Features".

Alcatel and its OSS partners are now uniquely positioned to deliver the carrier-class, end-to-end Ethernet service provisioning, performance and diagnostics features required to guarantee rapid VPN service deployment for service providers and superior VPN service monitoring for enterprises.

"There is a clear call from service providers to standardize Ethernet management in order to push it to the next level of utilization, " said Basil Alwan, president of Alcatel's IP activities. "The 5620 SAM's new features, enhanced via pre-integrated partner solutions, give service providers a plug- and-play simplicity to advance their Ethernet service delivery. As a result, service providers can now accelerate cost reduction and revenue generation while giving enterprises more control and visibility of their Ethernet WAN services."

Highlights of the new features include the following:

* Service-aware management -- Customer Network Management (CNM) toolkit new on the Alcatel 5620 SAM allows providers to quickly build web portals for enterprise customers giving them highly granular bandwidth control and visibility of the Ethernet WAN interconnect -- a key feature to differentiate a service provider's offering

* Convergent service delivery -- Syndesis' NetProvision quickly and cost-effectively provisions and optimizes services across a multi-vendor Ethernet network, accelerating Ethernet service introduction

* Service-centric performance management -- InfoVista features satisfy enterprise demand for increased visibility of their Ethernet WAN service via highly granular, real-time, web-based service level reporting

* Automated analysis and impact assessment -- EMC Smarts software from EMC Corporation automates real-time root-cause and business-impact analysis across MPLS networks and related domains, reducing mean-time-to-repair and enabling more efficient prioritization of network faults

These enhancements will be showcased in a unique demonstration at Tele Management World (TMW) in Dallas, Texas Nov 7-11, clearly showing how to accelerate service delivery, reduce operational costs and substantially improve customer satisfaction levels.
