Route1 Introduces MobiKEY

Route1, an innovator in mobile thin-clients, today announced MobiKEY the world's first USB thin-client for instant, secure remote computing. The latest edition to Route1's Mobi Solution family, MobiKEY simply plugs into a USB port to turn any internet-connected Microsoft Windows computer into an instant, secure Virtual Private Office, with computing, applications and data located elsewhere behind a firewall.

"More than 70 per cent of North America's workforce is either remote or mobile, " said Andrew White, Route1 CEO. "For most of them, work is no longer a place but simply what they do. MobiKEY is an ideal solution for those who regularly need to use their office applications and data while visiting customers and working from home or remote office."

MobiKEY's unique security feature doesn't require users to carry office applications or data with them. The device auto-runs from on-board read-only memory and its SIM Smart Card authenticate users with Route1's MobiNET service which allows office systems to connect to the 'guest' computer. The solution is virus, malware and attack resistant and the MobiKEY is not a node on the corporate network. MobiKEY's instant off design never leaves traces of user's work on the guest system and should the device be lost or stolen the unit can be switched off by MobiNET. MobiKEY users can 'telecommute' with up to five host systems while IT administrators can control even more.

MobiKEY is the latest member of Route1's Mobi Solution, a platform that enables instant secure, remote computing using thin clients. The platform's Seamless Workspace architecture and workSecure security design allow users to remotely operate office computing and network resources seamlessly and securely while traversing networks. The solution comprises hardware, software and the managed MobiNET service which authenticates users, devices and encrypts all data transactions using technology from RSA and Kobil Systems. With MobiNET, systems behind firewalls actually follow users and establish connections and since no applications or data reside on the mobile devices organizations can assure compliance with privacy, security and governance regulations.

Beta testers have responded enthusiastically to Route1's MobiKEY, its speed and operating ease via the USB port, and the level of security provided. "MobiKEY allows one to easily telecommute with one's desktop no matter where we may be. This has big implications for getting the benefits of a digital world, " said Cheryl Currid, President of Currid & Company, a technology advisory in Houston, TX. Andrew Boyko, a financial services employee, added "MobiKEY's use of an on-board Smart Card and integration with the secure connectivity provided by MobiNET gives utmost confidence with all online activity." Jeremy Pollard, a manufacturing automation consultant, said "MobiKEY has allowed me to use any system as a remote office to deliver critical process support elsewhere without installing software or leaving any traces."

Route1's MobiKEY supports systems with Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/2003 with wireless or wired connection to the internet. MobiKEY is scheduled to be widely available in Q4 at an introductory price of USD $399 (CDN $499) along with a monthly subscription to Route1's MobiNET service at USD $20 (CDN $25).
