SONG YI JEON: OUT & AT NSJ

Berlin-based jazz vocalist and composer Song Yi Jeon unveils a bold new artistic vision with The Earthy Suites, the debut album from her nine-piece ensemble SYJ Nonet, out on July 1, 2025. Rooted in traditional Korean percussion and interwoven with modern jazz harmonies and improvisation, the album is a rhythmic journey that bridges cultural and musical worlds. The Earthy Suites will be presented live in Europe at the North Sea Jazz Festival (Rotterdam, July 12).
"She's a cultivator of sound, wordless sound, that is able to reach inside and create that very precious experience as an artist that we all want, that is that soul to soul experience."
- Dianne Reeves

Inspired by Samulnori—a genre developed in 1978 by four Korean percussion masters—Jeon reinterprets rhythms from Honam, Yeongnam, and Jungbu Nongak into two contemporary jazz suites. These suites draw from traditional ritualistic and agricultural roots, connecting them with jazz's rhythmic lineage. The result is a rich tapestry of movement-based compositions that feel both ancient and forward-thinking.
