Expressions features pianist-keyboardist Christian Jacob, guitarist Larry Koonse, bassist Kevin Axt, and drummer Kendall Kay representing some of the finest musicians. Guest appearances by trumpeter Randy Brecker and special guest background vocalist David Thomas elevate the performances to even higher levels. A diverse set opens with "Do You Still Think Of Me" introduces the listener to Ms. Bennett's welcoming and attractive voice. Continuing with veteran standards such as the charming "Exactly Like You", Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Once I Loved" (an ideal bossa-nova classic and ideal representation for her voice), "Comes Love", and a joyful rendition of "Ain't Misbehavin'" the set exhibits the wide-ranging talent and enthusiasm of the performers. Newer material such as the love song "Baby", an infectious "Right On Time", and the thoughtful ballad "See You On The Other Side" further showcase the soaring sonic palette featured within Expressions. A special highlight is "Hushabye Mountain" featuring trumpeter Brecker. An extra bonus is her timeless version of Charles Trenet's "Vous Qui Passaz Sans Me Voir" which was a 1930's hit for Jean Sablon. Trained as an actor at the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute and singer at the Berklee College Of Music, Antonia Bennett has always cut her own path and displayed her own voice and style. Inspired by the example of her illustrious father Ms. Bennett embodies an expression that is at once welcoming and fresh with a reminiscent hint of nostalgic familiarity. Often showcased as an opening act over the last 15 years for her father's shows Antonia began pursuing an independent solo career debuting early recordings such as the EP Natural, and albums Embrace Me, Until The End Of Time, and Here For You. Compared to many by reviewers one listen reveals the obviousness of her unique voice, interpretation and style. Her latest material is the most rewarding to date and leaves no doubt that what she has to say deserves Expressions write your comments about the article :: © 2025 Jazz News :: home page |
