| Tonight at Vision Fest – Ivo Perelman & Matthew Shipp String Trio Live Premiere Ann Braithwaite Armageddon Flower Worldwide Live Debut at Vision Festival TONIGHT! The New Album on TAO Forms was their first communion; it is receiving profound reviews (see below). Tonight will be their 2nd communion.. This is the first time that Ivo recorded with the Matthew Shipp String Trio. It was a dream of his, and the String Trio purposefully reconvened last September in order that it be realized. This assembly: Ivo–Matthew–Mat Maneri–William Parker will have their concert debut at Vision Festival TONIGHT. The CD (exclusive edition/800) is available at VF at our merch table, and is available for pre-order now (to begin shipping immediately following VF) ... "Like the transcendentals in philosophy (truth, beauty, and goodness) Armageddon Flower resonates with a purity that transcends the limits of music itself. .. the qualities of AF do not exist in isolation; they intertwine, creating an integrated whole that goes beyond explanation, offering a glimpse into something beyond, as if we were experiencing the cutting edge of today's music." -Best of Jazz "Armageddon Flowers sounds like a search for truth, a deep quest for Rama or the Holy Ghost, the workings of the intricacies of string theory or any other concept that attempts to explain the existence of the universe. It plays out as a cosmic quest, along the lines of John Coltrane's Ascension. But it sounds as if it is closer to its goal than Coltrane was in 1966. And if it is a search for the meaning of life, Maneri, with his elastic lines, serves as the master entwiner, tying all the wandering sounds together, providing a sinuous form of gravity, as Parker supplies the heartbeat and the band gels up into a singular organism." -Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz "A stunning work from four visionary musicians." -Dave Heaton, The Big Takeover Extensive Interview w/ Ivo Perelman & Matthew Shipp together just up on PostGenre. Definitely put time aside to read the whole (in two parts!), but for now, check editor Rob Shepherd's introduction. "The music never panders, never simplifies—but it always communicates. It hums with a kind of shared intuition, as though these players are tapping into something older than genre or training—perhaps even older than music itself." -Mark Corroto, All About Jazz "A profound offering, created by four master improvisers, that challenges and elevates the very notion of what jazz, and art itself, can be .. Armageddon Flower is, without a doubt, a masterwork. It is a towering summit of musical dialogue, shaped by four artists whose individual careers already read like seismic events in contemporary music." -Thierry De Clemensat, Paris-Move Ivo Perelman photo of Matthew Shipp & Ivo Perelman by Peter Gannushkin. Ivo Perelman is a tenor saxophone master with a beautiful tone, and a tremendously seeking and inventive improvisor with a rich and full lifetime of devotion to both disciplines. Since his 1989 debut, Ivo, he has released an astonishing 134 recordings, with countless gems among them, working together with a who's who of highest tier improvisors spanning the globe. Fortuitously, a largesse of this work has just recently been made readily re-available for hearing (links below). While US-based jazz magazine/s of long-standing repute have curiously not seen fit to appropriately afford him a "seat at the table", in Europe it is otherwise. Congratulations to Ivo and to the Swiss magazine, Jazz 'n' More for featuring him on cover of their most recent issue. An excerpt of the piece, in English translation, is included below the sig in this email. And, the Music: Ivo Perelman's profoundly extensive body of work released by Leo Records (UK) over the decades since his debut, has just recently been made available on Bandcamp, with the aid of Burning Ambulance' Phil Freeman – cheers! A great selection of Ivo's most recent recordings have been released on the Mahakala Music label. These three recent, too, on Ivo's own Ibeji Music. And finally, a few personal favorites of mine: Magical Incantation, his most recent work in Duo with Matthew Shipp – a partnership which has by far the highest communion frequency in Perelman's oevre; and Garden of Jewels, an exquisite creation together with Shipp & Whit Dickey released on TAO Forms. write your comments about the article :: © 2025 Jazz News :: home page |
