Three New Tracks From Pianist Rob Clearfield

Composed by trumpeter Marquis Hill, produced by drummer and DJ Makaya McCraven—two musicians with whom Clearfield has worked closely over the years—"When We Were Kings" is the first single from Rob Clearfield's upcoming album.
Launching the track in a hip-hop groove, the pianist later turns to full swing, fulled by the dynamic double bass of Joe Sanders (Gerald Clayton, Charles Lloyd, LoJo Brown) and the fierce drumming of Fred Pasqua (Romain Pilon, Laurent Coq): the single announces a great album, by one of the best-hidden treasures from Chicago's creative scene.

With "Fields" Rob Clearfield delivers a breathtakingly beautiful track. Reuniting for the occasion with his teenage friend from Milwaukee double bassist Joe Sanders (they had their first gigs together), he unveils a trio track with pastoral and elegiac accents, shimmering with reverb that gives the song the floating magic of a poetic dream. A true gem from an artist to watch closely.

With this third single, pianist Rob Clearfield introduces the title composition of his upcoming album. Recorded as a duo with trumpeter Itamar Borochov, with whom he has regularly shared the stage and the recording studio, "Voice in the Wilderness (Part 1)" is a sublime, moving and deeply melancholy tête-à-tête, magnified by the trumpeter's slightly orientalizing sound and the delicate sound treatment applied to the piano's tone. A suspended moment of grace.
