| Edson Natale & Paulo Brandão - Ruidagem, a garagem das sete lembranças For nearly ten years, Brazilian musicians and sound artists Edson Natale and Paulo Brandão have been quietly crafting something extraordinary—an immersive exploration of how everyday noises shape our lives. Their ambitious project, rooted in the concept of ruídos afetivos (affective noise), weaves together sound, memory, and storytelling through an album and a companion book, set to launch in tandem. The Genesis: A Sonic Archive of the Everyday It began with a simple invitation: Natale and Brandão asked friends, family, and collaborators to send recordings of ordinary moments—sounds often overlooked, yet deeply tied to personal histories. The response was staggering. Over a thousand audio files, most captured on mobile phones, poured in from across Brazil and the world. These fragments of life ranged from the mundane to the profound—the creak of a farm gate, the murmur of shared meals, the rhythmic sway of a bus in motion, the soft hum of a parent soothing a child, even the haunting final breath of a loved one, preserved in the mechanical sigh of a ventilator. A Global Chorus of Memories The recordings arrived from Roraima to Cariri, Camanducaia to Altamira, Porto Alegre to Recife—and beyond, from Egypt, Pakistan, Spain, Colombia, Russia, the Philippines, China, Mozambique, Argentina, Portugal, and the United States. This vast, intimate soundscape became the foundation of Ruidagem, a garagem das sete lembranças (Noise-making, the Garage of Seven Memories), an album of seven meticulously composed pieces that transform raw noise into resonant art. youtube thumb From Sound to Story: The Birth of a Book Five years into the project, Natale and Brandão realized these sounds held more than musical potential—they were vessels for narrative. They invited a group of writers to reflect on three central themes: affective noise, memory, and music. The resulting anthology features contributions from Anelis Assumpção, Ciça Pereira, Daniel Iberê, Gabriel Natal, Jorge Maia, Marcelo Pinheiro, Marcelo Sandman, Maria Eugênia Moreira, Natália Barros, Parteum, Suely Mesquita, and the artists themselves. The book's striking cover, designed by Beá Meira with graphic design by Cíntia Belloc, is a visual echo of the project's sonic depth. It is being published through a collaboration between Editora Mireveja and zarpaZanza. The Artists: Alchemists of Sound and Memory Edson Natale—musician, composer, and writer—blurs the lines between sound, memory, and narrative. With a background in cultural production, including notable work with Itaú Cultural, his projects consistently challenge artistic conventions. Paulo Brandão, a producer and sound artist, crafts immersive auditory experiences through field recordings, noise manipulation, and digital processing, redefining how we listen to the world. An Invitation to Listen Differently The album Ruidagem, a garagem das sete lembranças will be available on streaming platforms, while the book offers a literary counterpoint—a dialogue between sound and word. Together, they invite audiences to reconsider the hidden poetry of everyday noise: how it lingers in memory, evokes emotion, and blurs the boundary between dissonance and melody. More than an artistic endeavor, this project is a meditation on presence—a reminder that even in the hum of the ordinary, there is music waiting to be heard. write your comments about the article :: © 2025 Jazz News :: home page |
