| Planet D Nonet - Doctor Professor Leonard King in Tribute to Joe Williams On a Sunday afternoon, December 17, 2023, Dr./Prof Leonard King drove to Cadieux Cafe on Detroit's east side to hear the PD9 (aka Planet D Nonet) perform. Usually, he would have recorded music playing in the van within five minutes of pulling out of the driveway, but that day, for some reason, he drove several minutes in silence. It wasn't long before he began innately hearing the melody to one of Joe Williams's recordings. At that moment, he decided to ask RJ Spangler if the PD9 would want to collaborate with on a Joe Williams project. Of course, RJ and the guys were receptive! As far as the material was concerned, Leonard wanted the selections to primarily focus on the life of Joe Williams AFTER his departure from the Count Basie Orchestra, with one exception -The Comeback. More about Dr/Prof Leonard King: His longest association was 35 years, at different intervals with organist Lyman Woodard's Organization. For 16 years he toured the planet with saxophonist James Carter's various groups (James started with Leonard's group as a teenager in 1984). He leads his own band such as the Proportioned Orchestra (three bassists, drums/vocals), Oopapada (now a quintet with trumpet/saxophones/guitar/bass/drums & vocals), and the Dr. Prof. Leonard King Orchestra (16-pieces). These are the groups that provide a great cross section of creativity for me. 01.WHO SHE DO 6:34 (J.Williams)Matt on top, Christopher, Leonard (scat), Charlie, Michael 02.THE COMEBACK 7:02 (Peter Chatman (Memphis Slim), EmbassyMusic Corporation)Christopher, Michael 03.DETOUR AHEAD 5:20 (HERB ELLIS, JOHN FRIGO, LOU CARTER)Alex, Charlie 04.SAD SONG 10:24 (Will Tilghman) Alex, James, Tbone, Tre, Charlie, Christopher 05.NIGHT TIME IS THE RIGHT TIME 7:31 (Nappy Brown)Charlie, James 06.YOUNG MAN ON THE WAY UP 5:27 (J.Williams)Christopher, Trevor & Michael 07.It's The Same Old Story 7:02 (Benard Ighner) 08.DON'T PUSH, DON'T PULL 4:28 (Bert Lawrence & Sid Wyche, Regent Music Corporation)Tbone 09.SOME OF THIS 'N' SOME OF THAT 4:54 (J.Williams)Michael, Tre, Matt Arranged by Leonard King: 1 Arranged by Jeff Cuny: 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, Arranged by Ryan Bills: 4, 7, 8 Leonard King, all vocals and cowbell on #9 CREDITS: Recorded August 2, 2024, Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit MI.
