| KSDS Jazz 88.3 FM Launches a New Series Exploring Nexus between Jazz and the Fight for Civil Rights In celebration of Black History Month, KSDS Jazz 88.3 FM is proud to announce a limited run, on-air series exploring the connections between jazz and the fight for equal civil rights in America. Titled Freedom Now! Jazz and Civil Rights, each distinct installment of this daily hour-long program will air every weekday throughout February, reexamining the landmark events of the Civil Rights Movement through the lens of the music that fortified and galvanized our nation's signature campaigns for equality and dignity. Through segments meticulously curated by our expert hosts — some of the preeminent music historians of our time like Will Friedwald, Kenny Washington, Neil Tesser, Loren Schoenberg, Chuck Granata, and Ricky Riccardi — and first encounters with rare or previously unheard recordings, listeners will gain a more holistic understanding of the relationship between jazz, jazz musicians, and the Civil Rights Movement than ever before. Each episode will focus on a seminal artist, composition, or historic event taking place at the intersection of jazz and the fight for civil rights. These programs will explore not just how jazz became a vehicle for activism, but how, in turn, activism became a vehicle for jazz, ultimately illuminating how and why, at least in this case, the medium and the message are inextricably bound. "Jazz artists have been at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement in our country from the beginning, and this project is about honoring the musicians and artists who used their music to confront injustice and inspire change, " said KSDS General Manager Ken Poston. "We hope to educate, inspire and celebrate the incredible cultural impact of jazz during one of the most pivotal movements in history." Throughout Black History Month, KSDS invites our entire community — here in San Diego, across the country, and around the globe — to join us in celebrating the central role Black artists have played in the creation, development, and continued evolution of the music we champion every single day. So tune in each weekday this February at Noon PST to 88.3 FM in San Diego. Or, if you're anywhere else in the world, stream us live at jazz88.org or via the KSDS mobile app. And be sure to visit our website, jazz88.org, for insightful reporting and commentary and edifying multimedia content offerings all month long.
