Cliff Korman CD Release for Urban Tracks Thursday Dec. 19th 8PM Blue Note Rio de Janeiro

Cliff Korman releases his latest album Urban Tracks at the Blue Note in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday Dec. 19 at 8PM. The album showcases Cliff's music as a bridge between New York and Rio, the two urban centers which inform and inspire his work. Recorded in Brooklyn with New Yorker Harvie S and "carioca" Rafael Barata, the album joins the repertoire, swing and approach of the two cities, creating "Urban Tracks" within and between them. For this performance Cliff adds percussionist Jovi Joviniano to his piano trio, as he further explores the rhythmic elements of these connections

Cliff Korman has spent his career playing both high-quality jazz and Brazilian music, often combining together the two idioms. Sounding unlike anyone else and avoiding predictability, Korman has mastered the jazz vocabulary, infusing it with his own spirited musical personality and his love of the Brazilian heritage. His fresh and personal chord voicings, along with a style that is thoughtful yet full of creativity, make Urban Tracks a rewarding listening experience.

Korman is joined on his latest recording by bassist Harvie S and drummer Rafael Barata, both of whom supply versatility, solid support, and stimulating ideas. Among the highlights are the energetic "Cheio de Malicia, " a version of "Manha de Carnaval" that explores several moods and tempos, an unpredictable exploration of "All The Things You Are, " and Korman's memorable solo piano outing on "Canhoto." Whether playing a straight forward version of the late Benny Golson's "Whisper Not" or Caetano Velosa's soulful and soothing "Trilhos Urbanos, " the pianist is heard throughout in prime form.

Cliff Korman was born and raised in New York. In 1981 at the Creative Music Studio's World Music Institute in Woodstock, he met Brazilian clarinetist Paulo Moura who inspired his lifelong exploration of Brazilian music. Korman earned his doctorate at the Manhattan School of Music where he was the Coordinator of Brazilian Studies and led the Brazilian Jazz Ensemble. He eventually moved to Brazil where he is on the faculty at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais.

In his career, Cliff Korman has participated in many Brazilian jazz CDs, playing keyboards, contributing arrangements and sometimes working as the producer. He has been an important part of projects with Gerry Mulligan (Paraiso – Jazz Brazil), Astrud Gilberto, Ana Caram, Paulo Moura (Mood Ingenuo – Pixinguinha Meets Duke Ellington), Chuck Mangione (The Feeling's Back), Corina Bartra, and Wendy Luck among others. Some of his own recordings include Rhapsody In Bossa (the music of Gershwin and Jobim), Gafieria Dance Brasil, Migrations, Trains Of Thought, Brasilified, and Bossas And Ballads.

Urban Tracks is Cliff Korman's latest accomplishment and serves as a perfect introduction to his music for those not already familiar with his brilliant playing.
