Production values are so stellar it sounds as though it were recorded in the studio… The band is plenty raucous, though, clearly driven…" "There are many fine big bands in the greater Seattle area. What raises the Pony Boy All-Star Big Band to the top is the visionary personality of their leader and drummer Greg Williamson. Greg's experience with Woody Herman, Ernestine Anderson, and mentor Jeff Hamilton inspires this "local" band to have the spirit of the great "road bands" of the 70s and 80s with the forward feeling of marvelous new inhouse arrangements and compositions. The seasoned players and soloists are all capable of performing with the best LA bands but have chosen to raise their families in the beautiful Pacific NW! So sit back, turn your system up to live volumes and enjoy "This Is Now!" Dave Barduhn former Stan Kenton arranger; (Published: Hal Leonard, Warner Bros, etc) "We just finished listening… Fantastic choice of charts! Unbelievably bright and clean, especially given that it was recorded live! That sure as hell wasn't Radio Shack mics." - Tom Daniels, JazzClubsNW "This is a great live album by the professional big band "Pony Boy All-Star Big Band". The best professional players in the Seattle/Tacoma area. The ensemble playing is stunning! They are "one instrument." The tune "Geo Rose" is a stand out on this album… There are some great solos on this recording. The playing has outstanding subtlety and shading. With this being a live recording it is impressive that this entire record was completed in "one take." I have seen this band perform live… reminds me of a Jazz big band I used to go see live when I lived in the San Francisco bay area… called the "Full Faith and Credit Big Band." - Robert Deehan, Tacoma Jazz on J Street SELECT PROJECTS 2024 CD This Is Now NW CD Release Summer Tour: Friday Harbor, Tacoma, Seattle, Marysville, North Bend 2022-24 Boxley's monthly PBASBB Third Friday's - Live and Streaming homage programs to Count Basie, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Bob Brookmeyer, Francy Bolland/Kenny Clark, Bob Hammer/Charles Mingus, Clayton/Hamilton, Kenny Wheeler… and new music with guests Mordy Ferber and Brian Shaw. 2019 Stravinsky to Basie - PBASBB at San Juan County Fair 2009-16 Snoqualmie Casino - Contract Band for Don Rickles Show, Bob Newhart Show, Joan Rivers and others 2015 - now Boxley’s Pro-Am Big Band - A monthly teaching big band, professionals combined with students 2003-13 Pony Boy Records Jazz Picnic - Host Band 2010 “Claude Thornhill's Real Birth of the Cool” - Earshot Jazz at Seattle Art Museum 2010 Bobby Caldwell with PBASBB - one week at Jazz Alley 2009-10 Seattle AYP Expo 100 Year Centenial - Grant & new music informed of a 100 year old World’s Fair 2009 Ronnie Pierce 1947 Dream Band C.S.I. - PBASBB recreation of acclaimed modern NW big band 2007 CD Jazz Traditions: Conversations & Deconstructions - Live Concert and recording new music with recorded interviews of NW jazz icons, Jack Straw Grant, Earshot Golden Ear Award 2006-12 Concurrently Consecutive Antiphonal Sonic Sculpture Stationary Traveling Big Band & Dance Musicians wandering through public spaces find their way to each other through "antiphonal" 4Culture Grants w/ Arts Councils of Kent, Enumclaw, Des Moines, Duvall, Kirkland, Snoqualmie 2000 CD Plays the Music of Gaylord Jones with Charlie May award winning composer of “Rifette” & other Freddie Slack arrangements, recorded live at Red Kelly’s 1987-2002 Greg Williamson touring band member of Glenn Miller, Woody Herman, Harry James, Ernestine Anderson, Steve Allen, and Steve Miller. write your comments about the article :: © 2024 Jazz News :: home page |
