"Remembering Sam Burtis" Memorial Celebration Sunday, August 18th 12-3 PM Jazz Gallery

Sam Burtis was an American free-lance trombonist, lower brass player, composer, arranger and educator. Born October 2, 1948 in Far Rockaway, New York, died December 29, 2023, NYC. His career spanned over fifty years as a section player, studio musician, arranger jazz soloist and educator. He was a contributor to the dynastic legacy of Mingus Music, writing arrangements as well as leading the Mingus Dynasty Band for several years. Check out more here:

"On Sunday, August 18th, we will be remembering Sam with music, personal stories, a photo gallery and special guests. Cecilia Colemans' Big Band will be featured, as Sam played/ recorded with her band for many years. All musicians have donated their time to make this a special day. (Program Outline is included below)

Sam Burtis (October 2nd, 1948 - December 29th, 2023) The trombonist/tubist had credits since the late '60s with Buddy Rich, Carla Bley, Larry Harlow, Tito Puente, Joel Kaye, Eumir Deodato, Dave Matthews, Herbie Mann, John Tropea, Bill Watrous, Grant Green, Jeremy Steig, Astrud Gilberto, Urbie Green, Lee Konitz, Art Farmer, Barry Miles, Phil Upchurch, David Sanborn, Lonnie Liston Smith, Candido, Jackie McLean, Sam Jones, Earl Klugh, Mingus Big Band, Lionel Hampton, Bob Mintzer, Chico O'Farrill, Cleve Pozar, Mike Longo, David Liebman, Marty Sheller, Roswell Rudd, Phil Woods, Earl McIntyre and Frank Perowsky among his many concurrent Latin and pop sessions. Burtis died December 29th at 75.

Leibman's Band, The Mingus Dynasty, Tito Puente 's Latin Orchestra,

Cecilia Colemans Big Band etc.. will be playing throughout the venue

Family will travel to Brooklyn waterfront near the navy yards @ Empire

Fulton Park to spread Sam's ashes at his request … lunch to follow

nearby. If you were a close friend to Sam and you would like to meet

Following the Jazz Gallery Memorial at 530PM, there is another

event @ Birdland in the Downstairs Theater that will include more

dedications to Sam and also to Mike Longo. The big band will be

playing Mike Longo' charts -lead by Frank Perowski.
