Andy Pratt Trio CD Release Show @ The Jazz Showcase Chicago Tuesday, February 20th 8:00 PM-11:00 PM

Andy Pratt, who is based in Chicago, is a fluent and melodic jazz guitarist who also sings with a deep and friendly voice. A masterful storyteller, his interpretations are full of tasteful charm and honest emotions.

Pratt is joined by bassist Joe Policastro who he has worked with for many years, and the always greatly in-demand drummer Phil Gratteau. Together they perform a wide-ranging set of music that includes five vintage songs from the Great American Songbook, two Burt Bacharach tunes, a Perez Prado mambo, and a movie theme.

The Gershwin's "Soon" opens the program with a chorus of Andy Pratt's unaccompanied guitar, a swinging solo, and a fine tradeoff by bass and drums. The guitarist sings on the classic "Little White Lies" and the lesser-known but superior ballad "When Joanna Loved Me." The latter is a nostalgic song about a lost love and includes some heartfelt singing and guitar playing. Perez Prado's "Patricia" is an offbeat choice, an instrumental mambo that gives the guitarist an opportunity to stretch out. His wistful singing on "We Three (My Echo, My Shadow & Me)" is memorable and Pratt takes one of his most rewarding guitar solos on an uptempo version of Cole Porter's "From This Moment On, " expertly alternating single-note lines and chords. Trio concludes with a moody version of Jerry Goldsmith's "Love Theme From Chinatown, " and a pair of lesser-known Burt Bacharach songs: "There's Always Something To Remind Me" and a happy rendition of "Something Big."

Andy Pratt has worked in the Chicago area as a jazz guitarist, vocalist and composer for over 20 years, performing solo and with the top local musicians. His composition "Happiness Is Home" was a semi-finalist in the 2016 International Songwriting Competition. His first two albums, Horizon Disrupted and Sweeter Than The Wine, were singer-songwriter albums that emphasized his originals. Trio fulfills his desire to give his own fresh spin to a variety of classic songs in a straight ahead jazz setting.
