Bossas & Ballads: Cliff Korman Piano Solo "Michelle"

After years of dividing his time between New York and Brazil, following his heart and musical instincts, pianist, composer and arranger Cliff Korman has established his home in Rio de Janeiro. As a follow-up to his 2022 release Brasilified (which at present registers 800k streams), Bossas and Ballads (Tiger Turn, 2024) is his first solo recording made in Brasil, and reflects his love for adagios, and his interpretative approach of reharmonization and orchestration on the piano. He offers up an album of solo piano interpretations and improvisations. His adventurous performances include readings of "Montreux" (Hermeto Pascoal), "Encontros e Despedidas" (Milton Nascimento), "Some Other Time" (Bernstein, Comden and Greene), "Michelle" (Lennon and McCartney) and his composition "Almonds and Roses." Throughout his career, Cliff Korman has always loved and been inspired by the North and South American jazz and popular music songbooks. At the same time, the pianist has consistently sought to play the songs in an unpredictable fashion, stretching out and coming up with fresh interpretations.

The full album will be released February 16, 2024 on digital platforms, preceded by two singles: "Michelle" (Lennon and McCartney) on January 12 and "Almonds and Roses, " Cliff's reading of Blue in Green, on January 26.

BIO

Born and trained in New York, pianist/composer Cliff Kormanʼs relationship with Brazilian music began in 1981 at the Creative Music Studio's World Music Institute in Woodstock, where he met the legendary Brazilian clarinetist Paulo Moura. From their friendship and musical partnership a series of concerts and recordings was born: Mood Ingênuo: The Dream of Pixinguinha and Duke Ellington (Jazzheads), Rhapsody in Bossa, on the music of Gershwin and Jobim, and Gafieira Jazz, a celebration of the sounds of Brazilian ballroom.

While still in NY, he produced and arranged a number of Brazilian Jazz CDs for the Chesky label, including Chuck Mangione's The Feeling's Back and Entre Amigos, featuring vocalist Rosa Passos and bassist Ron Carter. His recording Migrations (Planet Arts, 2004) illustrates the mark Brazilian music and culture have made on his compositions and improvisational language.

Since establishing his spiritual and physical home in Brasil, Cliff has become one of the most acclaimed and. respected North American artists and teachers in the country; his resume includes performances and recordings with Toninho Horta, Milton Nascimento, Leny Andrade, Astrud Gilberto, Jon Lucien, Carlos Malta, Henrique Cazes, Nelson Faria and Mauricio Einhorn, and two-piano duo projects with Wagner Tiso, Gilson Peranzzetta and Crist.v.o Bastos. He is currently on faculty at the Instituto Villa Lobos - UNIRIO in Rio de Janeiro, teaching Popular Brazilian Music and Improvisation, and as consultant to the Instituto Paulo Moura coordinates the project to digitalize and research Moura's musical archive.
