| Brazilian Guitarist-Singer Jose Gobbo New CD & Upcoming Shows Jose Gobbo is an adventurous guitarist whose playing is filled with subtle creativity and an appealing performer whose conversational vocalizing sounds as if he is singing directly to each listener. With stimulating accompaniment by bassist Max Beckman and drummer Jay Ferguson, Jose Gobbo performs seven of his compositions on Current that were recently given lyrics by Deuler Andrade. Throughout each performance, the interplay between the players is quite impressive with the three musicians often thinking as one. Gobbo often sings in unison with his guitar before taking adventurous solos that are both melodic and full of original ideas. Beginning with the spirited "Mais Feliz, " the guitarist-singer performs "Dia Das Criancas" (which has a particularly rewarding guitar solo), "Perdido Na Correnteza" (a stirring performance with powerful drumming), the playful three-note patterns of "Clareou, " the medium-tempo ballad "Father's Day, " the charming waltz "Toda Simpatia, " and a happy straight ahead closer called "Hope." Jose Gobbo was born in Brazil and moved to Iowa City in 2011 to pursue a Master's degree in Jazz Performance. He made his recording debut as a leader in 2013 with Zé, appeared on John Rapson's The Night Sky and Turquoise Sea, and was part of the local music scene. In 2014 he moved to Illinois where he has been an important musical force ever since. Among Gobbo's musical activities have been working with the Chip Stephens Organ Trio (with whom he recorded Transgressions) and the Brad Wheeler Quartet, recording Live From Home with the House Trio, becoming an important educator, and performing with Chip McNeill, Tito Carrillo, Larry Gray, Jim Pugh, and Ron Bridgewater. In 2022 Jose Gobbo formed his trio with Jay Ferguson and Max Beckman and they have worked regularly ever since. Current is the group's first recording and is filled with colorful music that memorably showcases the musical talents of Jose Gobbo as a guitarist and a singer."
