Karl Latham and his “Friends and Family” All-Star New Year’s Eve Celebration @ Shanghai Jazz

Please join Karl Latham and his "Friends and Family" group for an All-Star New Year's Eve Shanghai Jazz Celebration featuring legendary jazz bassist/composer/arranger and Grammy winning producer, Director of the Dizzy Gillespie alumni Groups: John Lee. Also joining Karl will be iconic jazz trumpeter Freddie Hendrix, young lion keyboardist Alex Collins and master composer/arranger/flutist/tenor saxophonist and recent #1 Jazz artist Don Braden.

A celebration of music, food, good vibes and good friends, featuring the music of Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock and some arrangements from the Don Braden/Karl Latham Big Fun(K) group.

Karl Latham performs globally with Grammy Award winners, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members and acclaimed artists in a wide range of styles. Karl subbed on the Broadway productions of "Bring It On", "Hamilton", "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical", and "Ain't Too Proud". Karl leads his own group "Living Standards"; co-leads Don Braden/Karl Latham Big Funk, and currently shares the drum chairs in the John Lee Quartet, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All Stars and the Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Latin Experience with Paquito D'Rivera. Karl is an adjunct professor at four NJ colleges and is a member of the Percussive Arts Society Education Committee.

John Lee is a Grammy Award winning record producer and audio engineer. He has produced over 100 recordings and is the co-founder of the record label JLP, Jazz Legacy Productions. From 1984 thru 1993, John Lee was Dizzy Gillespie's bassist. Performing and recording in the trumpet master's various bands including the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet, Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and Dizzy's Grammy Award winning United Nation Orchestra. After Dizzy's passing, his family asked John to create an ongoing tribute to the great man and his music—and the concept for the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars was born. John is the bassist and director of the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars, Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band and the Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Cuban Experience. He has also worked in the bands of Gary Bartz, Larry Coryell, Jon Faddis, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Gambarini, Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Heath, Gregory Hines, Claudio Roditi, Sonny Rollins and McCoy Tyner.

Over the past two decades, Freddie Hendrix has become one of the most in demand trumpeters in Jazz and beyond. Also an accomplished composer, arranger and educator, the Teaneck, New Jersey native's skill and versatility has resulted in him working with a wide array of performers that range from the Count Basie Orchestra, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, the Christian McBride Big Band, the Roy Hargrove Big Band and the Heath Brothers, to Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys. A product of the esteemed Jazz program at William Paterson University, with a Masters in Jazz Studies and Performance from New Jersey City University, Hendrix also shares his knowledge and passion for the music by serving as a faculty member at the The New School in New York and Jazz House Kids, in Montclair, New Jersey.

Alex Collins - Pianist/Keyboardist first met Karl Latham in May of 2019 at Shanghai Jazz, where they were both performing with bassist John Lee's quartet. Ever since, they've been performing together in several groups including Karl Latham's Living Standards band, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars led by John Lee, and Big Fun(K) co-led by Karl and saxophonist Don Braden. Alex can also be heard in the bands of drummers Ronnie Burrage and Gerry Gibbs.

Don Braden's jazz career has spanned over 40 years. He has toured the world with jazz greats Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Tony Williams, Freddie Hubbard, Roy Haynes, Herbie Hancock and many others, and has performed in venues as diverse as Carnegie Hall, Saturday Night Live, Harvard University (where he studied Engineering as an undergrad and currently teaches), and countless jazz festivals and clubs. He has played on over 100 CDs as a sideman and has produced 23 as a leader, the most recent being his critically acclaimed Earth Wind and Wonder Volume 2 (also #1 on JazzWeek.com) and In the Spirit of Herbie Hancock & Chemistry, co-led with bassist Joris Teepe.

Don is a highly experienced educator. Currently, he is the Director of the Harvard Jazz Combo Initiative, teaches part-time at the Prins Claus Conservatoire in the Netherlands, and is the Music Director of both the Litchfield Jazz Camp (since 1998) and the Texas Jazz and Blues Camp (since 2016). He has toured as "Guest Jazz Master" with the Hancock Institute. He ran NJPAC's Wells Fargo Jazz For Teens Program for 15 years, the jazz program at Montclair State University for several years, and led the Harvard University Monday Jazz Band for three years. He has had several articles published over the years, including "Take Excellent Care: Health and Fitness for Musicians", in the June 2018 issue of Downbeat magazine.

Seatings at 6:45 and 9:15. No music charge, we will have a special prix fixe menu for all guests. Second seating will feature two sets of music plus a midnight champagne toast! Reservations required, price for dinner will be $125 for the first seating and $169 for the second, tax, drinks and 20% gratuity are additional.
