The J.J. Johnson Centennial Celebration will feature Dave Chamberlain's BAND of BONES plus guest artists Steve Turre, James Burton III, and vocalist Antoinette Montague on Jan. 21, 2024.

New York's Christ & St. Stephen's Church will host the special concert, paying tribute to the great and highly influential trombonist-composer.

Ever since 2012, Dave Chamberlain's Band Of Bones has been performing annual birthday tributes to J.J. Johnson, the founder of bebop trombone and an inspiration to every trombonist who followed. Johnson had a long career as an always-modern trombonist and an innovative composer.

Trombonist Dave Chamberlain (who doubles on flute) has worked with such notables as Jaki Byard, Mike Longo, Sam Rivers, Tito Puente and many other jazz and Latin music groups. He also leads the Hora Decima Brass Ensemble and his Afro-Caribbean group Direct Latin Influence.

Chamberlain formed the Band Of Bones over 15 years ago, taking his inspiration from the J.J. Johnson-Kai Winding recording JJ & Kai Plus Six. Band Of Bones consists of nine trombonists (including two bass trombonists) and a rhythm section plus vocalist.

On Jan. 21, 2024, Dave Chamberlain's BAND Of BONES will be paying tribute to J.J. Johnson and celebrating the centennial of his birth at Christ & St. Stephen's Church (120 W. 69th St. between Broadway & Columbus, New York, NY 10023, 212-787-2755). The unique group will play sets at 3 and 4 p.m.
