The Thomas Music Study Club Presents Jazz in the Afternoon with Carla Cook Sat, November 18th 3 PM Triad Theater

You don't want to miss this November 18, 2023, Scholarship Fundraiser by The Thomas Music Study Club, a branch of the National Association of Negro Musicians, at the Triad Theater on W. 72nd Street in New York City.

This Detroit native, who has been inspired by R&B, Motown, gospel and country, has an improvisational style that's steeped in the swing tradition yet eclectic, and brimming with fresh interpretation. She has a warm contralto sound with an amazing wide range of colors. She can sing a hefty, bluesy timbre, reach crystal clear high notes, then scat with sure-footed richness and she does it all with an acute sense of rhythm and timing.

John Murphy of the Washington Post says, "She has sass that enlivens her impeccable diction, and tremendous soul that lets her swagger with gutbucket finesse, but it's all buttressed with sparkling optimism and innocence."

Her amazing voice earned her an AFIM-Indie award and a Grammy Nomination for her debut album "It's All About Love", and widespread critical acclaim for her two subsequent recordings, Dem Bones and Simply Natural. Dem Bones has been labelled "an intoxicating album that is as adventurous as it is accessible." Soon after moving to New York from Detroit, Cook was seen regularly on the jazz scene. She has worked with notable artists such as Steve Wilson, Jimmy Heath, Regina Carter, Fred Wesley, Eric Reed, Don Byron, Patrice Rushen, Maceo Parker, Craig Harris, Sekou Sundiata, Cyrus Chestnut, Savion Glover, Ben Vereen, Russell Malone, Igor Butman, Wycliff Gordon, Bruce Barth, Carl Allen, and Rodney Jones. She has opened for Ron Carter, Michel Legrand, Wayne Shorter and B.B. King.

In an extraordinary career, Cook has performed or recorded as a guest artist with such luminaries as the Count Basie Orchestra and Lionel Hampton's Big Band (she was the last of a long line of esteemed featured vocalists who regularly performed with him before his death). She originated the lead vocal role for Wynton Marsalis' Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra's The Cotton Club Parade at City Center. The role was later performed with various vocalists for the Broadway production, renamed After Midnight. In 2011, she was the featured vocalist with the world-renowned Jazz Sinfonica, an 82-piece orchestra, performing in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

You are in for a special treat on November 18th! It will be a truly memorable afternoon that you don't want to miss. Be sure to Be there!!
