In 2013, Sam was selected as a semifinalist in the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition; as a semifinalist, he performed at The Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. for legends Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Heath, Branford Marsalis, Bobby Watson and Jane Ira Bloom. His 9 albums as a leader and over 200 as a sideman—with such legends as George Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Lou Donaldson, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Brian Blade, Jimmy Cobb, and Jim Hall—have cemented him as one of jazz's foremost practitioners, beloved for his warm, round tone and lyrically swinging melodicism. Bernstein's trio with drummer extraordinaire Bill Stewart and organ master Larry Goldings is one of contemporary jazz's iconic bands. Mixing classical music, contemporary jazz, Korean traditional music, and the big band sound, Hong has created a unique corner wherein lush harmonies and impressionistic backgrounds set the scene for Korean rhythms and clear melodies, painting rich sonic portraits of the natural world. Her most recent release, EE-YA-GI (Summit, 2017) was met with critical acclaim, and to Birdland she brings a 17-person band full of New York heavy-hitters including Rich Perry, Jonathan Saraga, Andrew Hadro and Jeremy Powell. $30 tables / $30 bar + $20 food/drink minimum November 5 (Sunday) 7:00 & 9:30 PM - Birdland Theater Caity Gyorgy Caity Gyorgy (pronounced George) is a rising Canadian vocalist who has delivered bebop and swing stylings around the world. The 2-time JUNO award winner has performed and recorded with Christine Jensen, Pat LaBarbera, Jocelyn Gould, Ira Coleman, Bryn Roberts, Joe LaBarbera and others at jazz clubs and festivals across Canada, Mexico, Japan and the USA. Where many vocalists are content to explore the Songbook for its timeless depth, Gyorgy's skill as a writer brings her personal voice even further to the front: like Downbeat's Scott Yanow has noted, fans will love that her "originals sound as if they are from the 1950s with more modern lyrics." In fact, these lyrics were awarded the Grand Prize in the jazz category of the 2021 John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Currently signed to Brooklyn label La Reserve Records, Gyorgy albums "Now Pronouncing" and "Featuring" both received JUNO awards. The evening features a sizzling selection of songs from Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Jordan, Marlene Dietrich, Kay Thompson, Umm Kulthum, and many more. Together with a swinging five-piece band featuring music director Jake Landau on piano, Dan Berkery on drums, Sam Sadigursky on reeds, Yuka Tadano on bass, and Harvey Valdes on guitar, this will be a dreamy, madcap soirée of talk and tunes. Katrina Lenk has had the good fortune to be in several Broadway shows: The Miracle Worker, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, Once the Musical, Indecent, Company, and The Band's Visit, for which she won Tony and Grammy Awards. Performing standards from the Great American Songbook in a way that is both all her own and yet deeply dedicated to the great achievements of the master singers, Monheit has been the vocalist of choice on recordings by the great Terence Blanchard (Let's Get Lost), Tom Harrell (Wise Children), Harold Mabern (Afro Blue), David Benoit (Two in Love and Believe) and others. As a leader, she has released 13 full-length albums; at a recent engagement at Birdland Jazz Club, she celebrated the release of her latest album on Club44 records, Come What May (2021). Her first recording in five years, Come What May captures Monheit at her peak. Her group features Michael Kanan on piano and Neal Miner on bass, and Joe Strasser on drums. Her PBS special "Live at Scullers Jazz Club" aired nationally on PBS. Long influenced by jazz, R&B, and hip-hop, Benjamin and her distinctive sound gained both inner clarity and public attention through work with music icons Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Macy Gray, and The Roots. Her mission to blend genres and dismantle musical boundaries developed on her critically-acclaimed solo albums “Retox” (2012), “Rise Up” (2018), and “Pursuance: The Coltranes” (2020), and she was voted 2020 Rising Star Alto Saxophonist in the Downbeat Critics Poll, as well as Up and Coming Artist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association. When a near-fatal car accident in 2021 threatened her ability to perform, Benjamin persevered, recording and releasing her album “Phoenix” to rave reviews. Featuring special guests Dianne Reeves, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Patrice Rushen, Sonia Sanchez, Angela Davis and Wayne Shorter, it solidifies Benjamin’s artistic presence as an indispensable voice in contemporary music culture. A teacher at the iconic Berklee College of Music for nearly 35 years, Pellitteri’s record of service in music is vast. In this special engagement at Birdland, he plays in honor of his daughter, Veronica, who passed unexpectedly in October 2014. A Memorial Fund has been named in her honor at LaGuardia High School of Music and her Art in New York City—where she trained as a vocalist—to benefit young musicians in their studies. What began as a tribute performance at Birdland in 1999 has developed into the annual Django Reinhardt NY Festival, now in its 25th year. For this year’s festival, legendary violinist/guitarist Dorado Schmitt brings his two sons—the virtuosos Samson and Amati Schmitt—to perform with him in what is sure to be a series of show-stopping performances. Joined by Francko Mehrstein on rhythm guitar and Gino Roman on bass, the group have performed across the world at the San Francisco Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and 24 years at Birdland. Landing on the scene in NYC, AC soon shared the stage with tap dance greats including Buster Brown, Jimmy Slyde, and Savion Glover. He has shared the family stage with his sister, widely-acclaimed singer and songwriter Emily King, and has been writing, producing, arranging, and singing his own original music. In his nearly six decades behind the drums, he has recorded and performed with Nancy Wilson, Phil Woods, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, John Scofield, Paquito D’Rivera, Bill Charlap, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, Toninho Horta, and Milton Nascimento, among countless other masters. Da Fonseca continues to make waves in the international music scene: in 2022, he enlisted a top-tier group of Vinicius Gomes (g), Helio Alves (p) and Gili Lopes (b) to record Quarteto Universal’s “Yes!!!”, a record that met much critical acclaim. I felt like I was really at a point in my life where…I could sing these stories because I had lived them.” And so, to record “Impressions of Ella, ” Robin McKelle decided to enlist the best of the best: Kenny Washington on drums, the pinnacle of straight-ahead swinging; Peter Washington on bass, renowned as one of jazz’s most important low-end men; and the legend Kenny Barron, whose work with Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, and Freddie Hubbard is beloved. From “How High the Moon” to “I Won’t Dance, ” to Gershwin’s “My One and Only, ” to “April in Paris” and “Lush Life, ” McKelle’s new recording brings audiences both into the stylistic world of her idol Fitzgerald and into the idiosyncratic world of McKelle’s contemporary voice, one which has traveled the world performing everything from R&B to country to jazz. Director David DeJesus, a fixture on both jazz and Latin music scenes, will guide the orchestra as they bring to life the many flavors of Latin Jazz on the Birdland stage. $30 tables / $30 bar + $20 food/drink minimum November 19 (Sunday) 7:00 & 9:30 PM - Birdland Theater Sheila Jordan Trio Sheila Jordan stands as one of America’s last living great jazz vocalists. After moving to New York in 1951, she befriended Charlie Parker; married Parker’s pianist, Duke Jordan; studied with Lennie Tristano and Charles Mingus; and performed regularly with jazz royalty. Jordan was raised in poverty in Pennsylvania’s coal-mining country, and she faced threats and violence as a white woman for working predominantly with black musicians. But her talent and love for the music allowed her to work with the top proponents of bebop and beyond. The 1970s saw Jordan venturing into innovative, adventurous musical forms with the likes of Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, and Bob Moses; in subsequent decades, she put forth 15 more records as a leader. Amazingly, in 2021, after a brilliant life in music, a lost album—which is now known to be her true first venture as a leader—was unearthed and finally released. The record, Come Love, precedes what was long considered Jordan’s debut, Portrait of Sheila. Now—at 94 years young—Jordan continues to appear on major stages. This November, she brings her dazzling energy to Birdland, gracing us for one night only with her trio. $30 tables / $20 bar + $20 food/drink minimum November 20 (Monday) 7:00 PM – Birdland Jazz Club Karen Akers – “Water Under the Bridge” Singer and actress Karen Akers will return with her concert featuring musical director Alex Rybeck. Akers takes a look back at some of the songs that first brought her acclaim in cabaret as well as on Broadway, television, and recordings — works by Craig Carnelia, Maury Yeston, Edith Piaf, and Stephen Sondheim, among other treasures. Akers is one of America's more arresting and successful concert stars. She is the recipient of the 2005 New York Nightlife Award for Outstanding Female Cabaret Vocalist, as well as the 2009 Nightlife Legend Award. Ms. Akers has appeared in many prestigious venues worldwide, including Carnegie Hall and The Hollywood Bowl, as well as the Cafe Carlyle and The Oak Room at The Algonquin Hotel. She has taken her music to the south of France, Russia, and Barcelona’s Liceu Opera House. She appeared on Broadway as one of the original stars of the Tony Award-winning musical Grand Hotel. Gheber’s debut album, 2020’s Dearly Beloved, and her 2nd recording, 2022’s If I Knew Then, earned her acknowledgement in All About Jazz and Downbeat Magazine, and her forthcoming effort, Where Flamingos Fly, featuring vibraphone legend Steve Nelson, is set to release in 2023. Gheber’s love for joyously bouncing rhythms and the power of song has led to frequent performances at leading New York jazz institutions Smalls, Mezzrow, the Django at the Roxy Hotel, and Birdland. She tells a lot of big story with fewer notes than most young artists of her age.” An internationally-regarded performer, she has played across the United States, United Kingdom, Italy, Greece, Spain, Poland, Hungary, and South Korea, and in 2017, the famed Baku Jazz Competition selected her as a Finalist. Alterman is the pianist who Ramsey Lewis calls “a joy to behold”; who Les McCann calls “a giant”; and whose warm, upbeat pianism calls forth the exuberant wit of Ahmad Jamal, the blues of Red Garland, and the reflections of Bill Evans. An Atlanta native who has been performing in New York City for over ten years, his latest release is Joe Alterman Plays Les McCann: Big Mo & Little Joe (August 2023); he also released Solo Joe: Songs You Know in the same month. His prior recording, The Upside of Down, captured the power of two sets he played at Birdland in 2019 and 2020 in the months just preceding the pandemic. Alterman’s expertise lies in his ability to bring the heat on keys, conjuring up the down-home good feelings which we so badly need right about now. At 19 years old, Anaïs Reno bears the marks of great success: already the winner of the Forté International Competition, Michael Feinstein Competition, Mabel Mercer Competition, the Julie Wilson Award, and a Finalist in NFAA’s YoungArts competition, Reno’s awards are matched by her performance credits: at Birdland, Carnegie Hall, David Geffen Hall, The Django, Chris’ Jazz Café in Philadelphia, and many others. Her last album, “Lovesome Thing: Anaïs Reno Sings Ellington & Strayhorn, ” which she recorded with the Emmet Cohen Trio (when Anaïs was 16), received critical acclaim and rose to number 6 on the jazz charts. In 2021, Reno was featured in the acclaimed video, “New York State of Mind, ” featuring Idina Menzel and Stephen Colbert; and, in 2022, she was featured on national television singing “America the Beautiful” for the Mets/Yankees 9/11 game.
