10/21: CONNIE CROTHERS LEGACY PROJECT SPONSORS VORTEX

DEEP FRIENDSHIP: THE CONNIE CROTHERS LEGACY PROJECT is proud to sponsor VORTEX, the duo of Shoko Nagai (piano, accordion) and Satoshi Takeishi (percussion), at this year's Edgefest in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Deep Friendship was created to honor the life and legacy of the great improvising pianist Connie Crothers. A virtuosic improviser and composer with a truly original sound, powerfully committed to honest self-expression, her importance in the world of improvised music cannot be overstated. "Deep Friendship, " the title of one of her compositions and of a Connie Crothers Quartet recording, is an apt expression of Connie's approach to life and music. "When we create music, it's always from love." (Connie Crothers)

For its inaugural activity, in 2022, Deep Friendship sponsored a set by Double Duo: Jay Clayton (vocals, looping) and Ken Filiano bass, effects) at Edgefest 26 (set starts at 2:06). Edgefest was selected for its dedication to adventurous music, and because of Crothers' relationship with the festival. Crothers performed at Edgefest in 2013 and was scheduled to return in 2016 with the improvising trio TranceFormation. Due to her passing in August of that year, a tribute concert was performed in her honor at the festival.

VORTEX

Satoshi Takeishi and Shoko Nagai perform together under the name VORTEX. They incorporate both acoustic instruments (piano, accordion, percussion) and electronics and audio processing into their live performances and sound production. Their music typically has both compositional and improvisational elements, with an abstract and experimental nature. Their mission is to integrate all the sonic elements available to them to create a uniquely mixed musical narrative. Their music has been described as "almost visible to the listener."

Edgefest is an annual four-day festival dedicated to the exploration of contemporary music, both improvised and composed. Over the course of its 27 years, Edgefest's audience has grown exponentially, attracting enthusiastic fans from Canada, Europe, and Japan. This year's theme, "Rescued and Ready, " features a diverse roster of innovative artists—local to national, established and emerging—who weathered pandemic constraints and came out on the other side with inspired and exciting new music.

Edgefest 2023 runs from Wednesday October 18th through Saturday October 21st. Festival passes and tickets for individual performances can be purchased through Edgefest's website. For those unable to attend in person, livestream information will be made available.

With its goal of fostering the spirit, wisdom, and musical values embodied by Connie Crothers, Deep Friendship: The Connie Crothers Legacy Project is proud to contribute to Edgefest 27.
