FYC | Freddie Bryant | "Upper West Side Love Story"

"...Upper West Side Love Story stands as a

crowning achievement in his [Bryant's] career."

- Bill Mikowski

Upper West Side Love Story - a 16 movement song cycle with music and lyrics by Freddie Bryant - is a tour-de-force, executed brilliantly by his remarkable ensemble. It is inspired by Bryant's first-hand experiences witnessing the gentrification of his beloved neighborhood. His effort is a confident and profound work of art - deep, textured and resonant.

An all-star cast led by Carla Cook's soaring voice and moving performances, includes brilliant soloing by Regina Carter, Donny McCaslin and Steve Wilson, Bryant's guitar, strings and a grooving rhythm section. "UWSLS" guides the listener through a powerful story, from childhood and family, to the current day. A unique jazz vocal recording, like an opera in two acts fusing swing, Latin, Brazilian, Reggae, funk, spoken word and hip-hop influences to relay a musical history of the neighborhood.
