One Breath Rising presents The Makanda Project Sunday, October 1st 4:30 PM All Saints Church Park Slope Brooklyn

One Breath Rising is thrilled to welcome back The Makanda Project! World-renowned multi-instrumentalist, composer, orchestrator and educator, Dr. Makanda Ken McIntyre (1931-2001), was a tireless musical innovator for nearly half a century, with 12 albums and more than 350 compositions and arrangements to his credit. He wrote and played ballads, calypsos, bebop, avant-garde and the blues. Makanda was known primarily for leading his own ensembles -performing on alto saxophone, flute, bass clarinet, oboe and bassoon -and being proficient on more than 16 instruments, including bass, drums and piano. His playing on all these instruments projected a highly energetic, celebratory life force. But he was also a brilliant and prolific composer.

When Makanda died, his family found over 300 compositions that he had never recorded (in addition to the 75 or so that he had). Pianist and bandleader, John Kordalewski, who studied and performed with Makanda, created The Makanda Project in Boston in 2005 to explore those unrecorded compositions. Inspired by the richness of this music, they have remained a working group in the years since and have become an important part of the Boston jazz scene.

John has written arrangements to over 60 of Makanda's compositions. These works are marked by a distinctive rhythmic and lyrical quality that will surprise and delight you. His compositions cover a wide range, including "straight ahead" jazz pieces, gorgeous ballads, pieces based on complex rhythmic structures, calypsos, and "free jazz" pieces. This concert will celebrate Makanda's work as a composer, John's work as an arranger, and an ensemble that has developed its own sound over its 18-year history. This is a performance you don't want to miss!
