The 2023 Third International
Stretto Piano Festival
with
Steve Sandberg and Luiz Simas

Baruch Performing Arts Center
Engelman Recital Hall
Friday July 21 - 7pm
55 Lexington Avenue, NY 10010

An eclectic duo concert featuring the great multi-genre pianist/composer Steve Sandberg and the gifted Brazilian pianist and singer/songwriter Luiz Simas.

Three time Emmy-nominated composer/pianist Steve Sandberg plays original music that masterfully blends classical, world music and jazz with the excitement of virtuosic improvisation.

He has toured with Bebel Gilberto, David Byrne, Tito Puente, Mario Rivera, Ruben Blades, and many others. He founded the Steve Sandberg Quartet featuring Snarky Puppy Violinist Zach Brock in 2016 and has played internationally including a recent tour of Egypt, featuring the duo in the Cairo Jazz Festival. He is also a student of the legendary classical piano teacher Seymour Bernstein.

He is thrilled to be playing in a double concert with Luiz Simas. His set will be a retrospective of his musical explorations of the last ten years, encompassing performances of classical music, his original "world classical" and "dream music" pieces, and much more, culminating in a duet with Luiz.

Composer/singer/pianist Luiz Simas was born in Rio de Janeiro. He performed and recorded with some of the greatest Brazilian artists, and many of his original compositions were recorded in Brazil and abroad. Living in New York since 1989, he has performed in venues such as the Birdland Jazz Club, the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Room, and the Iridium in New York. He's also performed in Jazz Festivals and clubs in Norway, France, the UK, Ukraine, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, the Caribbean, and Brazil. In 2018 he formed the Simas & Amorim Duo with brilliant Brazilian guitarist Wesley Amorim.

Luiz is very happy to be performing in this double concert with his friend, pianist Steve Sandberg. He will play and sing many of his compositions, plus arrangements of well-known Brazilian tunes. Finishing the concert on a high note, he and Steve will collaborate on a surprise duo.
