Bennett Paster’s Understated Trio Live at Mezzrow: Wednesday 1/25/23

As the world around us continues to grow ever more complex, pianist and composer Bennett Paster found himself looking to music for an antidote: something to settle, to soothe, to smooth over the wrinkles of our modern lives. His new trio and set of compositions, and their forthcoming recording, are the results of his search, resulting in a simpler, more essential expression of jazz; music that is, in a word, Understated.

Synthesizing elements of soul jazz & boogaloo, blues and groove, with singable melodies and a touch of modern harmony, the music is satisfyingly listenable while still substantial and genuine. Group interplay and groove trump individual soloistic expression; the listener can surrender to the band's sonic universe and the songs land in the ear with a satisfying splash.

Keyboardist, composer and producer Bennett Paster is one of New York City's most creative and versatile musicians. He has performed at clubs, concerts and festivals in the United States, the Caribbean, South and Central America, Central and South Asia and throughout Europe. He has been a featured performer with jazz stars Wallace Roney, Keb Mo, Robben Ford, Kurt Elling, Curtis Stigers, Rufus Reid, Bill Stewart, Peter Erskine, Billy Hart, Albert "Tootie" Heath, Ndugu Chancler and Yosvany Terry among others. He has also performed with musical theater and cabaret stars Christine Ebersole, Ann Hampton Calloway and Michael Cerveris.
