Mathieu Soucy is an up-and-coming jazz guitarist with his own sound and fresh approach to playing straight ahead jazz.

Soucy is joined by pianist Gentiane MG, bassist Mike De Masi, and drummer Jacob Wutzke plus singer Caity Gyorgy (who has two guest vocals) on Recollecting for an invigorating set of new music that points the way towards swinging jazz of the future.

The program begins with "Lennie's Changes, " an original that does sound like something that the innovative pianist Lennie Tristano might have recorded in the late 1940s. Its complex melody gives way to creative guitar, piano and drum solos.

Caity Gyorgy uplifts the Rodgers & Hart classic "Where or When" with some lively scat-singing while Soucy shows how he can play in the bop tradition with his own sound and approach. The quartet performs the sophisticated jazz waltz "Turner Days" (highlighted by a piano-guitar tradeoff) and the medium-tempo "Blues For Barry." "Thinker And A Fool" has colorful lyrics by Caity Gyorgy about a mismatched couple along with some fine singing, a bossa nova feel, and one of the best piano solos of the set.

"Mike's Mudrá" is a swinger with a catchy melody and different-than-usual chord changes. The quirky "5th Avenue" will remind some listeners of Thelonious Monk's music. It is followed by a melodic solo showcase for Soucy on Monk's "Reflections." The set concludes with some unpredictable and heated improvising on "Recollecting, " displaying the young talents at their best.

The 27-year old Canadian Mathieu Soucy graduated with a degree in jazz performance from McGill University in 2019. He studied composition with John Hollenbeck in addition to having private studies with guitarists Alex Goodman and Peter Bernstein. Soucy had previously recorded a pair of independent singles as the head of a jazz trio ("Unstablues Grounds" and "Trinkle Tinkle") and a modern jazz and poetry set, Jeu d'ombres, with storyteller Sarah Rossy.

The release of Recollecting serves as a very enjoyable introduction to the guitar playing and compositions of Mathieu Soucy, a name to remember for the future.
