| Oran Etkin, Matt Wilson, Steve Nelson & Kevin Hays + Orchestra! World Premier Oran Etkin's reimagining Benny Goodman Quartet (with Matt Wilson, Steve Nelson and Kevin Hays currently filling in for Sullivan Fortner) is on the road and getting ready to team up with Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra to premier a new Suite that Etkin wrote for the quartet plus orchestra! The suite is called Sing On and is inspired by what's often considered America's first interracial popular music band: Benny Goodman's 1935 quartet with Teddy Wilson, Gene Krupa & Lionel Hampton! Etkin interweaves themes from the quartet's work into his original compositions in the suite for the quartet plus string orchestra and harp. On the same concerts, Etkin will perform the Aaron Copland Clarinet Concerto, which was originally commissioned by Benny Goodman! The second half of the concert is rounded out with William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony. The program takes a fresh look at Goodman's legacy, on the struggles for racial equity in the jazz and classical worlds and in society as a whole. This milestone for Etkin and his quartet showcases his versatility both in a virtuosic classical concerto setting and in a forward-looking jazz setting with his new suite for orchestra and quartet. It also showcases the deep connection that the musicians in the quartet have developed with each other - grounded in their love for the music that Goodman, Wilson, Krupa and Hampton created 90 years ago, but staying fresh, innovative and true to this moment in time that we live in now. The engagement in Hilton Head includes a quartet performance and two performances with the orchestra. More information about Oran and this project Here. Information about Hilton Head concerts Here. Oran will be back in New York performing Nov 19 11am at National Sawdust as part of his monthly Timbalooloo duo series for families, with Bobby Sanabria as his special guest! Then he flies to Brazil to record a new album with his trio with legendary songwriter Danilo Caymmi! write your comments about the article :: © 2022 Jazz News :: home page |
