Justice - The vocal works of Oliver Lake, FYC

Justice - The Vocal Works of Oliver Lake was released in Summer 2022 on the label High Two. It has since picked up great press notice and is in consideration for a Grammy nomination.

The Justice project brings together the quintet Sonic Liberation Front with the new Sonic Liberation Singers in capturing innovative new works of Oliver Lake.

Justice was composed, arranged and conducted by Mr. Lake. He appears reciting two original poems accompanied by the vocalists and musicians. Justice premiered at NYC's Vision Festival in June, 2022 and was presented in Philadelphia in August, 2022 by Fire Museum Presents.

Here's what the critics are saying.

THE NEW YORK CITY JAZZ RECORD | JUNE 2022
a truly vital piece of the jazz/new music canon. — JOHN PIETARO

THE BANDCAMP DAILY - ALBUM OF THE DAY, JUNE 08, 2022
As idiosyncratic as it is spirited and fiery, Justice – The Vocal Works of Oliver Lake is an exciting and intriguing release from Sonic Liberation Front and one of jazz's most unique living voices. — JOHN MORRISON

STEREOGUM
UGLY BEAUTY: THE MONTH IN JAZZ JUNE 21, 2022 #09 — PHIL FREEMAN

JAZZIZ, JULY 3, 2022
The album's innovative, retro-to-the-future sum effect both affirms and expands on Lake's musical vision, honed over a half-century … so far. — JOSEF WOODARD

THE NEW YORK TIMES - [THE PLAYLIST] June 10, 2022
At times wild and purgative, the album is also full of moments like this one: poised, stubbornly hopeful, grounded in Lake's memories of a more revolutionary age and seeking to stir that energy up again.— GIOVANNI RUSSONELLO

JAZZ TIMES - [EDITOR'S PICK] July / August, 2022
…an always genre-jumping genius commingling with fresh, free players for something radically different from anything in each other's past. Steeped in gospel fire and R&B swagger, Lake has always been an adventurer beyond jazz's standard - not unlike percussionist Kevin Diehl, SLF's director of operations. — A.D. AMOROSI

DOWNBEAT AUGUST 2022 **** 4 Stars
Saxophonist Lake is in fine form for this first collection of his vocal compositions in 50 years. While his arranged melodies are funky ("What"), forlorn ("Aztec") and ethereal ("Clouds"), it is the work of the Sonic Liberation vocal quartet that shines, providing luscious stacks of harmony and dexterity to his songs of social urgency like "Justice." — AMMAR KALIA

POST GENRE JUNE 6, 202
Oliver Lake: Making Justice And Love A Reality
Though an esteemed composer, Justice is Lake's first project to comprehensively emphasize vocals. He has previously arranged pieces for Bjφrk, Lou Reed, and Abbey Lincoln, but Justice forces Lake to take these skills to another level. — ROB SHEPHERD
