BIO
New Orleans born saxophonist Donald Harrison is considered a master of every era of jazz, soul, funk, and a composer of orchestral classical music. He has created three influential styles of jazz: nouveau swing, a modern second-line, and quantum jazz.
In the HBO drama, "Treme", Emmy-winning director David Simon created two characters to portray how Harrison innovated new styles of music. The show is loosely based on Harrison's life and he actually plays himself in many episodes.

This talented artist is the recognized Big Chief of Congo Square in Afro-New Orleans culture and was made a Chief in 2019 by Queen Diambi Kabatusuila in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa. The Black Indians of New Orleans are a mix of African and Native Americans roots, affecting the traditions and culture of New Orleans for over 100 years.

Harrison honed his experience playing with over 200 jazz masters including Roy Haynes, Art Blakey, Eddie Palmieri, Dr. John, Lena Horne, McCoy Tyner, Dr. Eddie Henderson, Miles Davis, Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, Chuck Loeb, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Digable Planets, Guru's Jazzmatazz, The Headhunters, and The Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Harrison has been a mentor to artist as diverse as The Notorious Big, Jonathon Batiste, Christian Scott, Trombone Shorty, and Esperanza Spaulding.

JazzArts Artistic Director and drummer Ocie Davis toured with Donald Harrison Jr back in the early 2000s, before Hurricane Katrina brought the Davis's here to Charlotte. We have enjoyed that friendship, as Donald was JazzArts Camp Clinician in 2013 and guest on "Conversations with Curtis" May 2020.
