Rene McLean is a world renowned saxophonist, composer, band leader, and educator, who has long carried the mantle of Black Musical tradition-on stage with major collaborators, and on the faculty of the Jackie McLean Institute at The Hartt School, University of Hartford. With opening sets from jazz's living legend Bertha Hope and percussion great Baba Don Babatunde. Rene McLean & Music of the Spirit Born in New York City, Rene McLean is a world renowned saxophonist, composer, band leader, educator and producer. He began his musical training at the age of 9 under the tutelage and guidance of his father, the great Jackie McLean, and started leading his own bands at the age of 16. He has performed and recorded with the creme de la creme of Black Musical tradition: Jackie McLean, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Tito Puente, Horace Silver, Babatunde Olatunji, Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Abbey Lincoln, Dexter Gordon, Yusef Lateef, as well as in collaboration with poet-activist Amiri Baraka. He is presently Professor of African American Music on the faculty of the Jackie McLean Institute at The Hartt School, University of Hartford. Bertha Hope 5tet One of jazz's living legends, pianist/composer Bertha Hope has toured globally with artists like Nat Adderley, Dizzy Gillespie and Eddie Henderson, while being a respected educator and bandleader in her own right, with several albums under her leadership. In 2018 she won the National Jazz Museum in Harlem's Legends of Jazz Award. Baba Don Babatunde Percussionist Baba Don Babatunde has performed with dance companies around the world, and recorded with a wide variety of artists in the jazz idiom, rhythm and blues, and most African-derived percussion styles, all while being a featured member of the esteemed Last Poets. An acknowledged master teacher of African Drumming and the rhythms of the Diaspora in the Americas, he has been on faculty at the Harlem School Of the Arts for over 25 years.
