| Bobby Hutcherson, A Living Legacy - December 20 Bobby Hutcherson, A Living Legacy Presented by Stefon Harris and Joe Locke With special guests George Cables and Buster Williams Sunday, December 20, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM (Pacific Time) Free Zoom Presentation and Discussion The series celebrating jazz history and culture, is curated by Jessica Felix and hosted by Marcus Shelby Healdsburg Jazz is excited to host the world-renowned vibraphonists Stefon Harris and Joe Locke for their very special Zoom Presentation and Discussion titled "Bobby Hutcherson: A Living Legacy" on December 20, 2020, from 5 pm to 7 pm (Pacific Time). Bobby Hutcherson was born on January 27, 1941 in Los Angeles, CA and became one of the most celebrated and accomplished composers and musicians in the history of this artform. Bobby had a forward-thinking harmonic approach and an explosive improvisational language. He recorded with countless historical figures including John Lewis, Abbey Lincoln, Jackie McClean, McCoy Tyner, Lee Morgan, Frank Morgan, Dianne Reeves, Sonny Rollins, Pharaoh Sanders, Herbie Hancock, Billy Higgins, and many more. He was a generational player who bridged the vibraphone mantel from Milt Jackson and Lionel Hampton to the current generation of masters including Stefon Harris, Joe Locke, Warren Wolf, Steve Nelson, and Joel Ross. In fact, our guest presenters Stefon Harris and Joe Locke continue to carry the history and legacy of Bobby Hutcherson throughout their personal work. Stefon Harris states: "The ultimate mark of a great legacy can be measured by the impact that one's contributions have had in the lives of others. True geniuses leave behind legacies which play a significant role in shaping the world as we see it today. An even more rarified echelon of genius leaves behind a legacy which will shape the world for generations to come." Stefon Harris and Joe Locke will highlight specific recordings and YouTube videos of Bobby Hutcherson's music and will have a lively discussion on the legacy and impact of his music and compositions on past and current generations. Special guests for this presentation include legendary musicians pianist George Cables and bassist Buster Williams, who performed and recorded with Bobby Hutcherson throughout their career. Bobby Hutcherson has joined the elite ranks of individuals who have created an inspirational vision which continues to help us imagine a more creative and empathetic world. Stefon Harris' passionate artistry and astonishing virtuosity have propelled him to the forefront of the jazz scene. In 2020 on National Public Radio (NPR), Harris' feature highlighted his contributions as a musician but also as an educator and thought leader who teaches empathy from the bandstand. Harris has also been featured as one of the leading and emerging artists for Apollo's New Works Master Artist residency. In 2019, Hot House and Jazz Mobile awarded Harris best vibes. Heralded as "one of the most important artists in jazz" (Los Angeles Times), he is a recipient of the prestigious 2018 Doris Duke Artist Award, the Martin E. Segal Award from Lincoln Center, has earned four GRAMMY TM nominations, and has been named Best Mallet player eight times by the Jazz Journalist Association. He was also chosen Best Vibes in the 2018 and 2017 Downbeat Magazine Critic's Poll, the 2016 Jazz Times Expanded Critics Poll, the 2014 Jazz Times Critics Poll and the 2013 Downbeat Critics Poll. NPR's All Things Considered praised Mr. Harris' audacious CD Urbanus, which also earned a GRAMMY TM nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, as one of "The Year's Best New Jazz" recordings. Mr. Harris received his Bachelor of Music degree in classical music and Master of Music degree in jazz performance at Manhattan School of Music where he formerly served as the Associate Dean and Director of Jazz Arts. He has taught at universities throughout the world, has led curriculum development at the Brubeck Institute, and serves as Artistic Director of Jazz Education at New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Mr. Harris is a Professor at Rutgers University-Newark and served on the jazz faculty of New York University for the past decade. As a thought leader, Mr. Harris leads transformative presentations on corporate leadership development and team empowerment to Fortune 100 companies using jazz as a metaphor. His inspiring 2012 TED talk, "There Are No Mistakes on the Bandstand, " has gained nearly 800, 000 views to date. Mr. Harris has served on the Board of Directors for Chamber Music America, WBGO-FM and on the Board of Advisors for Percussive Arts Society. Mr. Harris' eleventh album as a leader is Sonic Creed featuring his band Blackout. He has also recorded as part of The Classical Jazz Quartet and as a member of the SFJAZZ Collective. He has recorded and performed with Joe Henderson, Wynton Marsalis, Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Bobby Hutcherson among many others. Joe Locke Joe Locke is widely considered to be one of the major voices of his instrument. He has performed and recorded with a diverse range of notable musicians, including Grover Washington Jr, Raul Midón, Kenny Barron, Eddie Henderson, Cecil Taylor, Dianne Reeves, Eddie Palmieri, Ron Carter, The Beastie Boys, the Münster Symphony Orchestra, and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, among others. Four Walls of Freedom, a six-movement suite based on the writing of the monk Thomas Merton, garnered high praise from the critical community as a major work and won several international polls. Live in Seattle, by The Joe Locke / Geoffrey Keezer Group, won the 2006 EarShot award for "Concert of the Year". His 2011 album, the captivating, immersive album VIA, is the result of a reunion of Storms/Nocturnes, the transatlantic trio with Geoffrey Keezer and Tim Garland. After Signing, the long-awaited follow-up studio album of Live In Seattle, 2012 also saw the release of Joe Locke's first ever symphonic project, Wish Upon A Star, featuring Locke's Quartet with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra (NE), and the Jazz radio charts #1 Blues & Ballads album Lay Down My Heart in 2013. In 2015 Locke released Love Is A Pendulum, a suite based on a poem by Barbara Sfraga - is already being hailed the most important work of his career. Locke's latest album is Subtle Disguise (2018). Locke is a six-time recipient of the Jazz Journalists Association's "Mallet Instrumentalist of the Year" Award, has received two Earshot Golden Ear Awards for "Concert of the Year" and the 2013 Hot House NYC Jazz Awards for Best Vibes Player.
