| VJC LIVE STREAMS - Vincent Herring Celebrates Bird at 100 Vincent Herring is one of the most formidable alto saxophonists on the scene today. He came up modeling his style after that of Cannonball Adderley and was so convincing that Nat Adderley asked Vincent to join his band. As a young man he went on to play with Cedar Walton, Horace Silver, Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey and many others. Now, a seasoned musician with 20 albums out as a leader and over 250 as a sideman, Herring is a mentor to many: he teaches at William Paterson University and Manhattan School of Music and holds court at Smoke, a jazz club located on NYC's Upper West Side. Performing with Herring at the VJC are three of the top jazz players in New York. For years, these four, top-tier musicians have come together as collaborators in each other's projects. Their familiarity with the bebop repertoire and each other's nuances will result in an evening honoring Bird's tremendous legacy. "I want people to think of the music and not the distorted picture that's often painted of Charlie Parker. Here it is: his 100th birthday and we're still celebrating and studying and being inspired by his music. There are a lot of great players but few innovators. Bird was a real innovator." – Vincent Herring, Smoke Sessions Records write your comments about the article :: © 2020 Jazz News :: home page |
