Eric Lilley Trio - Follow Up - Two Goats Music

Eric Lilley (born November 17, 1954) is an American pianist, keyboardist, bandleader, and composer. Lilley was born in Corona, California, the son of Neil, a salesman and Donna a pianist/music teacher. Lilley graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1978 and started his career with Atlantic recording artists, The Energetics. He shortly thereafter joined Herb Reed of the original Platters. He eventually settled in the Denver, Colorado area where he was in constant demand with local jazz, blues, rock and funk groups as well as a busy recording schedule.

In 1985 Lilley formed the jazz fusion group You Guys. In 1989 You Guys released Play de Doh on ITI Records and received favorable national airplay leading to festival dates at the Telluride, Breckenridge, and Vail jazz festivals among others. The decade of the nineties found Lilley touring out of Nashville and doing theatrical work in Branson, Missouri. He was keyboardist and staff arranger for the Shoji Tabuchi Show from 1994 to 1998 and served in the same capacity at the Lawrence Welk Show in 1999.

Lilley returned to the Denver area and received a MA in composition from the University of Denver in 2005. He resumed his busy playing schedule which included pit work with the National Touring companies of Hairspray, Wicked, Spamalot, and Legally Blonde among others. In 2005 Lilley formed Twin Goat Music and released Songs Without Words a solo piano disc. Subsequent releases have been Joie de Vivre and Follow Up, both 2020 releases by the Eric Lilley Trio.

The Eric Lilley Trio states the obvious with Follow Up, their second release in less than a year coming on the heels of their first critically acclaimed work, Joie de Vivre. Eric Lilley has developed his own sound within the modern mainstream of jazz. His harmonies are sophisticated, he generally does not sound like anyone else and he swings soulfully even on his more complex tunes.

On Follow Up Lilley presents another nine original compositions and is again joined by Mark Diamond on bass and newcomer Dru Heller on drums. Jose Espino guests on percussion for "Bud Bop" and "Leanin'" turning the trio into a rhythmic quartet.
