| DIANE SCHUUR RUNNING ON FAITH Vocalist Showcases Her Deep Knowledge Of The Blues And Strength As A Pianist PRODUCED BY Ernie Watts & Diane Schuur WHAT'S BEING SAID ABOUT "DIANE SCHUUR - RUNNING ON FAITH" "Schuur is playfully salty and intimate throughout Running on Faith" A.D. Amorosi / JazzTimes Magazine "A marvelously mature, swinging after hours record where Schuur takes the wheel with Ernie Watts at her side, this is as close to a civil rights jazz record as a white girl can come." Chris Spector Midwest Record Entertainment Reviews, News and Views "But she's far more than that, someone who even in her first new recording in six years still exudes a lot of charm and a lot of raw energy, enthusiasm, heart, and wonderment. She's what most great musicians strive to achieve, in that she is someone who gets listeners to feel her performance and not just listen to it." Tom Henry / Toledo Blade "Schuur digs deep on songs as close to her as skin...Deedles continues to be a force of nature in jazz. A very welcome one." C. Michael Bailey / All About Jazz On piano, Schuur shows that the blind are able to see, with a glorious solo read of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." Grace is reflected here in more ways than one. George W. Harris / Jazz Weekly "This is, remarkably, Diane's most personal record to date a by-turns angry, joyous, mournful, optimistic and spiritual mediation on the world we find ourselves in today. Adam Mattera / Echoes Magazine (U.K.) "Good listening, fully fleshed character, fine musicianship. Cohesive arrangements have clear intention. We get it." Alix Cohen / Cabaret Scenes Diane's rendition of Miles' 'All Blues' is among the best I've ever heard the whole band just SHINES on this one I've no doubt that DJs 'round the world will be spinning this one over and over again" Dick Metcalf / Contemporary Fusion Reviews Free 5 Star Png, Download Free Clip Art, Free Clip Art on Clipart ... Warm, romantic and mischievous! Music and thoughts for our troubled times. Grady Harp / Amazon.com "A heartfelt and uplifting album that evokes the earthy, cross-pollinated jazz of the '70s A virtuoso singer, Schuur's warm, amiable style brings an infectious joy to these songs." Matt Collar / All Music Guide "Creative freedom allows her to use both her powerful and supple voice and sparkling piano skills to paint what rolls as something of a sacred narrative true insight to her soul via a wide range of genres and spirited, soulful arrangements." Jonathan Widran / JW Vibe "Dinah Washington's mournful 'This Bitter Earth' is, in my humble opinion, one of the stand out tracks here for its depth and vocalized expressions." Anne Carlini - Exclusive Magazine "She dives deep into the blues of 'The Danger Zone, ' then jazzes up her new album with the swinging rhythm of Miles Davis' 'All Blues.' J.P.'s Music Blog "The blend of blues, gospel, straight-ahead jazz and uniquely interpreted popular tunes are rendered with Schuur's unique phrasing." Jim Hynes / Glide Magazine "Schuur's pipes sound as rich and inimitable as ever here" Tom Haugen / Take Effect Review "Intimate, charming performances" Ron Weinstock / Jazz and Blues Report "Diane Schuur has one of the best jazz blues voices: resounding, rich and honey coated. Sure it's changed over time but tonal accuracy and soul remain intact with unprecedented story-telling ability." D. Oscar Groomes / O's Place Jazz Magazine "She plays some wonderful piano on "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and has fine support from Ernie Watts [ts/ss], Kye Palmer [tpt/flg], Thom Rotella [gtr], Bruce Lett [bs] and Kendall Kay [drm]. "Running On Faith, " released by Jazzheads Music Group is co-produced by Schuur and Grammy winning saxophonist Ernie Watts. This is her first release in six years with music by some of her heroes; from Miles Davis to Carole King to Paul Simon to Percy Mayfield. "For the first time in my recording career, I chose all the compositions for this album. I've been focusing on the condition of our world, about what is, about what can be, " comments Schuur. Blues, straight-ahead jazz, gospel and a few tunes that defy classification are included. Percy Mayfield's "Walking On A Tightrope" opens, setting the tone as she sings "the blues and I, we know each other." Schuur reprises her admiration for Dinah Washington, with a mournful "This Bitter Earth, " and remembers her friend Ernestine Anderson who introduced her to the unifying lyrics of Miles Davis' "All Blues." The upbeat "Chicken, " her homage to Jaco Pastorius demonstrates the jazz chops of this album's tight ensemble as does Schuur's hard-swinging interpretation of Paul Simon's "Something So Right." Her often-referenced fondness of classic rock is at the root of the title track, originally recorded by Eric Clapton. Introspection brought her to the McCartney/Lennon classic "Let It Be" and Jeff Lynne's "The Sun Will Shine on you." In contrast to prior recordings, Schuur performs on piano throughout, showcasing her musical skills as an instrumentalist. She closes with lone piano on the spiritual "Swing Low Sweet Chariot." Blind since birth, she was nicknamed "Deedles" by her mother. The Tacoma-born Schuur grew up steeped in jazz, courtesy of her parents' record collection. She was officially discovered by jazz legend Stan Getz at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1979. Honors include two Best Jazz Vocal Performance Grammy Awards for "Timeless" and "Diane Schuur and The Count Basie Orchestra, " both released by GRP Records, the label that launched her recording career. "Running on Faith" is the follow-up to her well-received "I Remember You: With Love To Stan and Frank, " her debut on Jazzheads in 2014. Schuur's deep catalog includes projects for Atlantic, Concord and Vanguard. Schuur's voice is bold and expressive, simultaneously romantic and mischievous, radiating soulful warmth. It all started very early in her life when she made her stage debut at ten years of age. Her success has led to collaborations with artists and producers such as B.B. King, Ray Charles, Dave Grusin, Stevie Wonder, Phil Ramone, and Maynard Ferguson. For "Running On Faith, " Schuur takes the reins, crafting a most personal statement. write your comments about the article :: © 2020 Jazz News :: home page |
