Henry Godfrey Jazz Orchestra - Love Finds Everyone - A COVID Collaboration

Henry Godfrey is a composer and instrumentalist currently based in Boston, MA. He has performed his own compositions in venues and festivals across North America and South-East Asia. As a composer/arranger, he has worked with esteemed groups such as the US Army Blues and the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra.

Since moving from the Washington DC area, Henry has recorded and performed with the Henry Godfrey Jazz Orchestra, a big band he directs and writes for. Their first release, Love Finds Everyone (Jan 2019) was followed up with the extended release Love Finds Everyone LP Edition (July 2020).

Henry has performed with groups of various genres around the Boston area on drums and percussion. He's also recorded with the Buta Big Band, a Materia represented big band that performs covers of video game soundtracks. Before that, he performed with funk band LANDS, which performed at the 2016 Monsoon Music Festival in Hanoi, Vietnam.

After receiving his Bachelor's degree in Jazz Composition from the Berklee College of Music, Henry received a Master's degree from the New England Conservatory of Music. Henry has also studied the Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization, with a certification to teach the concept.

Love Finds Everyone [LP Edition] is a sweeping, dramatic selection of music from the Henry Godfrey Jazz Orchestra. Self-released on July 1, 2020, this album features premiere Boston-area musicians on compositions and arrangements written by Godfrey. Godfrey's romantic writing draws from the influences of Duke Ellington and Gil Evans, with a fire that is all his own.

This LP includes the three studio releases from HGJO's debut EP, plus four new previously unreleased tracks, including three live performances and one remotely recorded arrangement.

"She Moves Just Like the River" arrives first in a recorded version, featuring Polish trumpeter Kaya Meller and bassist Noah Harrington, followed up by an arrangement of "Shenandoah, " featuring trombonist Alan Hsiao. The studio tracks are rounded out with climactic rock/funk original "Why Not You, " featuring Southern California-based trumpeter Will Trueblood IV and guitarist JP Donelan.

Separating the studio and live halves of the album is a track recorded remotely during the coronavirus shutdown. Musicians recorded each part of a big band track individually in their homes and sent them in to Godfrey, who mixed and mastered this track in addition to writing and performing. This arrangement of Justin Stanton's "Bad Kids to the Back" (from Snarky Puppy's most recent release) features Kyle Zimmerman and Ian Buss trading solos on tenor saxophones and Godfrey soloing on drums.

The live recordings begin with a reprise of "She Moves Just Like the River, " this time featuring trumpeter Eliza Block and bassist Seajun Kwon. Flamenco-influenced original "Witch's Eye" follows, featuring saxophonist Shun Kumagai. Finally, Godfrey's most aggressive entry "Out of the Way" rounds out the album, featuring trumpeter Matt Kelly and saxophonist Daniel Bitrán. Listen for the technical quintuplet outro and atonal harmonies on this last track.
