At the age of 8, he began his first experiment on the alto saxophone, discovered his predilection for Jazz and Blues soon and ultimately became a student at the renowned Berklee College of Music. The US Army provided the possibilities to prove his experiences at Berklee, as a regular member of the Jazz Knights at West Point and boosted his professional career as a saxophonist. At 26 James released his debut album, "Think Positive" (2002) when his music career blossomed - performing with Red Holloway, Chaka Khan, George Duke, Billy Cobham, Prince, Bireli Lagrene, Gino Vannelli and Acoustic Alchemy. Derrick James became one of the most in-demand studio musicians and sidemen of the European Jazz, Funk and Pop Scene. In addition to performing as a regular member of the Jazz Knights at West Point, he has performed at the Montreaux Jazz Festival, the Hampton Jazz Festival, on the Rosie O'Donnell Show, for BET On Jazz, Good Morning America and on the HBO presentation of Sinbad's Soul Music Festival. write your comments about the article :: © 2020 Jazz News :: home page |
