Q/S to Prospect Park GERRY HEMINGWAY The solo performance of Gerry Hemingway will present a variety of acoustic and electro-acoustic works, as well as songs and other poetries from both current and past repertoire. His work as a solo artist began in 1974 marked by six different solo recordings spanning many decades of concentration on this medium of expression. Sunday's program will also offer a short visit to the ongoing interactive work with visual artist Beth Warshafsky. The collaborative work of visual artist Beth Warshafsky and percussionist/sound artist Gerry Hemingway has existed since the late 1980's. The passage of time since then has seen the simultaneous evolution of a mutual aesthetic along with their work's incorporation of developing technologies. On the one hand each artist is rooted in the fundamentals of their medium. In Beth's case this would include many years of work in painting and a variety of two dimensional mediums. In the background of Gerry's work is a long history as a performer and composer of acoustic and electro-acoustic solo music, both improvised and composed. The process to refine each new work is decidedly patient, often evolving over many performances, documentations and evaluations. The live interactive material is however continually changing as it explores through improvisation and risk the possibilities of a shared poetic expression. SAMEER GUPTA Sameer Gupta is known as one of the few percussionists simultaneously representing the traditions of American jazz on drum set, and Indian classical music on tabla. Originally a jazz drummer learning from his peers in San Francisco and Harlem NYC, Sameer's own interests and love of tabla brought him the support and guidance of several renown tabla maestros. Sameer is also a co-founder of the non-profit artist collective Brooklyn Raga Massive. Today he lives in Brooklyn and is actively involved in performing, curating, producing, and teaching through various institutions including the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn Raga Massive, Carnegie Hall's Global Encounters, and Ragas Live Festival. Sameer will present a traditional tabla solo covering a large repertoire of old and new compositions and variations as well as contemporary improvisation informed by his love of pushing the musical envelope. write your comments about the article :: © 2019 Jazz News :: home page |
