Chances are you've been hearing about Stephanie Nakasian's daughter, the 25-year-old bebop wunderkind Veronica Swift (currently appearing almost everywhere, including regular gigs at Birdland and an ongoing tour with Chris Botti). But talent has to come from somewhere, and Ms. Swift gives full credit to her parents, the late and much-missed modern jazz piano master Hod O'Brien and Ms. Nakasian, who has been a fave among jazz buffs ever since her tenure with Jon Hendricks and Company in the 1980s. Both mother and daughter share a fondness for - and revel in the legacy and influences of - Anita O'Day, June Christy and the larger school of jazz vocalists associated with Stan Kenton's Orchestra: the cool vibrato-less tone, the bright, upbeat swinging sound, a rare gift for improvisation and a "like-terminally-hip" attitude. Lately both Ms. Swift and Ms. Nakasian are spending most of their time on the road (although Veronica is making two appearances on the outskirts of town this weekend, in Brighton Beach on Friday and Caramoor in Katonah on Saturday) so any of their appearances in Manhattan are to be cherished.
