NY Shows This Week: Emma Frank, Aaron Whitby, Roxy Coss, Dave Liebman

The Liebman, Copland, Alessi Quintet
Featuring Drew Gress and Joey Baron
September 3-7, 8:30 and 11pm, Birdland Jazz Club

For the first time anywhere, Birdland presents all five onstage together! David Liebman, Marc Copland, Ralph Alessi, Drew Gress and Joey Baron are well known contemporary jazz masters-each a player, composer, and bandleader in his own right. Grounded in the jazz tradition, they are also committed to stretching the boundaries of the possible. These musicians have years of experience touring and recording together- Baron and Copland in Gary Peacock's trio; Gress and Baron in Copland's trio; NEA Master David Liebman and Copland in duo, quartets, and quintets; Drew Gress in Ralph Alessi's ECM groups; and Alessi in Copland's quartet. All the members contribute tunes to the band's repertoire.

With Cousin from Another Planet, Whitby—best known for his work with longtime collaborator Martha Redbone—offers what Greg Tate describes as "a funk-da-fied jam session feel undergirding tight, knotty, jazz-smart progressions." Get ready for a musical and visual experience, accompanied by a video art show by VJ Lady Firefly, that captures the colorful worldview of this soulful artist.

Emma Frank
Knitting Factory, Brooklyn, September 6, 7pm

Avant-garde folk artist Emma Frank returns with a new album on September 6th entitled Come Back, the follow up to her critically acclaimed 2018 release, Ocean Av. The Brooklyn, NY resident has a sound so multifaceted it intertwines folk, R&B, and jazz to create shifting tempos and winding melodies that are poignant, propelling and all-engulfing. Once again, Frank teams up with her frequent collaborator Aaron Parks to produce a work that is full of rich harmonies, gorgeous melodies and insightful lyrics that deal with love, lust, self-doubt, commitment and sadness. Emma's songs are journeys of self-discovery, framed by insightful lyrics and her warm, gossamer voice that songwriter Leif Vollebekk described as "like leather on silk."

Roxy Coss
Smalls Jazz Club, September 6-7, 7:30 and 9:00

ROXY COSS (tenor sax) // ALEX WINTZ (guitar) // MIKI YAMANAKA (piano) // RICK ROSATO (bass) // JIMMY MACBRIDE (drums)

Her aptly-titled fifth album, Quintet, celebrates Coss' communion with her stellar ensemble—pianist Miki Yamanaka, guitarist Alex Wintz, bassist Ricky Rosato and drummer Jimmy Macbride—which recently received the Local 802 Musicians Union emerging artist grant. Released in conjunction with a companion video series, Quintet's live studio recordings draw from the bandleader's entire catalog, and are the follow-up to The Future Is Female, Coss' provocative response to the 2016 elections.
