| JJA/JIC Creative Music Media Summit The Jazz Journalists Association, in affiliation with the Jazz Institute of Chicago, presents a free, day-long Creative Music Media Summit including seminars on the whys and hows of writing, broadcasting, visualizing and disseminating news and views of music, to be held Tuesday, August 27 from 10 am to 4:30 pm at Harold Washington College (30 E. Lake St., Chicago). The Summit is being held just prior to the launch of the 41st annual Chicago Jazz Festival in Millennium Park, August 29 – September 1. Aimed at students and the general public as well as media professionals at every career stage, the Creative Music Media Summit will comprise three interactive panel discussions, "Ask the Experts" one-on-one consultations (pre-registration required) and a plenary session with keynote address by Lloyd Sachs, author, editor, columnist, former radio show host and editorial writer for the Chicago Sun-Times. Sach's most recent book is T-Bone Burnett: A Life In Pursuit (University of Texas Press, 2016). Following the Creative Music Media Summit, attendees are invited to hear tenor saxophonist Isaiah Collier and his group the Chosen Few (free of charge) at the Museum of Contemporary Art's Tuesdays on the Terrace show. Confirmed participants include Frank Alkyer, publisher of DownBeat magazine; Mike Jeffers, drummer and president of Chicago Jazz Magazine and ChicagoJazz.com; Paul Abella, WDCB-FM music director, host of 'DCB Jazz"; Dave Cantor, Downbeat reviews and online editor; Ayana Contreras, producer of WBEZ-FM's "Sound Opinions" and Vocalo radio's "Reclaimed Soul"; Leor Galil, music writer for the Chicago Reader; Neil Tesser, author, writer and broadcaster, JIC and JJA board; Michael Jackson, writer, photographer, interdisciplinary artist, musician; Mashaune Hardy, social media manager and videographer of the Jazz Institute of Chicago; Tiffany Walden, co-founder and editor-in-chief of TheTriIbe.com; photographer and retired JIC Executive Director Lauren Deutsch;photojournalist Marc PoKempner; improvising painter Lewis Achenbach and author, radio producer, JIC board member and JJA president Howard Mandel. Sessions will be documented for online posting. "The Jazz Journalists Association grew out of meetings of writers, broadcasters and photographers in Chicago in 1986, " Mandel says of the non-profit international professional organization, "and the media landscape has gone through enormous changes, worldwide, since then. We try to keep up, hoping to be as creative as the music that inspires us. Chicago's got a vibrant and diverse scene that's it's a joy to explore, but the speakers at the Summit are those who observe it professionally. They'll talk about the inner workings, current issues and potentials of music journalism – highlighting current realities, for those who might want to pursue it, and those already in the mix." The Jazz Institute of Chicago, which curates the Chicago Jazz Festival, operates from a mission to nurture and perpetuate jazz in all its forms. Writers, broadcasters and photographers including Harriet Choice and Don DeMichael (both founders), J. B. Figi, Bill King, Terry Martin, Kent Richmond and Neil Tesser have served on its board; broadcasters Richard Steele, Leslie Keros, and writer John McDonough have been among panelists on the JIC's 2019 "Digging Our Roots" listening sessions.
